suspension Uprights

I am doing a final year University Project (thesis) and am in need of info, links etc. on suspension uprights for a-frame suspensions.

Basically we are designing a car, simplified f3000 or f1 (very simplifed), basically i have been given the pick up points for the top and bottom suspension arms (a-frames), I have to design and manufacture the uprights, someone else is doing the hubs. As to what type of info, anything at all, i only got the project so i know very little about the subject of suspension uprights. Any info basic, or preferably technical, would be greatly appreciated.

For a one-off, the choice is between buying a manufacturer's items as either complete uprights or bare castings, or to make your own, which is usually a matter of fabricating the items with a central machined piece of heavy tube that becomes the bearing carrier and sheet metal for the rest.

But bear in mind the loads they take... they need some integrity.

I'll echo Ray, if this isn't just a design exercise and the parts will actually be built and used at speed extreme caution is called for. An upright failure can well result in a catastrophic loss of vehicle control. I'd buy a finished part from a reputable supplier or do your homework VERY thouroughly before actually fabricating and using the parts.
