Mansell in the 430. Hmm, will be interesting, probably he'll crash the car and then accuse all other drivers of being jealous of what he has reached in his career. Oh wait, that was BTCC :P

Never really liked the man, and a change to GT's won't help that.

I have to say that is really good news. It should bring the punters in, glad I book my tickets and hotel last week.

Guess Jarek Janis didn't wanna do the jet commute thing or something like that on short notice?

Think Mansell will underimpress compared to Janis, and it's a total PR move, but hopefully it will be the only time. Get well Tomas!

Is Mansell still a draw for people who'd otherwise not attend the race?

I'll accept that this news might get the event some more coverage which alert more punters to the existence of the race, but would they be turning up to see an old Brummie Chuntermonkey?

I remember squeezing the camper in for that one!

Yup, fiver a night, IIRC, but the year before it was free?

Cracking weekend then. Sadly, I've sold the camper...

Not if last year's Grand Prix Masters at the 'Stone is anything to go by. Don't get me wrong, there were a fair few people there, but it was hardly "mania".

Well the attendance at last years event wasn't bad, so I can only see Nige entering as adding to that really.

I''m gonna book my tickets this week.

Prost was talking about driving with his son for Oreca in the LMS on Endurance Mag, on Motors TV.

What price for Mansell and sons and Prost and son competing in sportscars in the next 12 months.

Nigel Mansell will always be regarded as a great driver and get people to a race meeting but his sons have yet to earn any respect from me at least, when they win a race we will talk about them, 'till then they must work to earn respect

God I hope not! It would be absolute carnage with the Mansell boys out there, if their F3 exploits last weekend are anything to go by! I was at Oulton marshalling and they couldnt stay on track! Let loose in the LMS they would cause havoc!

Alain and Nicolas would be cracking. The younger is very promising, the elder proved he still has it during his FFSA-GT exploits in the Exagon Viper.

Nige and sons? God save us all.

Don't know about his sons, but I rate Mansell second only to Senna in his era, even better than Prost.

He showed a clean pair of heels to Johanson and Lammers in GP Masters.

Whilst 'our Nige' is still pretty quick there is a line that I dont want to cross and this news kind of leaves in two minds. Sportscar and GT racing has come so far in recent years in getting young quick professional drivers involved and I dont want to turn it into a circus.

If GP Masters collapses we might have about 20 old men looking for drives.

Johansons a factory Acura/Zytek driver while Lammers is no slouch.

It's no coincidence Mansell won the GP Masters, Prost, Trohy Andros.

Class is permanent.

its only good that nigel mansell is racing in the FIA GT, might pick up the crowd attendance figures which have been pretty woeful for some reason.

it eludes me why the crowd figures are so poor, at the oulton park british GT the crowd on the monday was big to say the least, silverstone LMES in 2005 was miniscule, same with donington park in 2006 for the LMS.

unfortunately though i most likely wont be at silverstone for the FIA GT, the words "new weekend job" and "may 6th" and "race weekend" do not bode well with one another.

I'll be supporting Mansell by default as he's driving one of the Scuderia Ecosse cars, I'm sure he'll probably draw a few extra fans through the gate.

Still most looking forward to the 90's Revival and GT3 though. :P

You have a point - I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing some of the GT1s like the Lambo, Corvette and MC12 of course.

Actually, while I'm thinking about it - this is my first trip to Silverstone and I've heard stories in the past of fans being penned in at the big meetings with very little access to anything and it not being possible to move around the track to watch from different viewpoints. Is this likely to be the case at this meeting (I'll be there for all 3 days) and will it ever be possible to get into the paddock area or is everything hidden away in the pitlane?

Might sound like a n00bish question but I'm used to Knockhill and everything always being available (paddock and the full circumfrence of the track) to the fans regardless of the size of the meeting.

The adverts for the race say free paddock entry and also free parking and grandstand seats. Can pretty much guarantee you'll be able to watch from all parts of the circuit - this was the case last year and it would be very sad if the organisers were to change it.
