After five days of tests, regularities and navigational challenges John Abel and Martyn Taylor continue to lead the 2014 1000 Mile Trial from Alistair Caldwell/Catriona Rings. With not much more than a day to go they must be getting nervous.

So cynical old me.
How do they arrange Able and Caldwell positions to swap before tomorrow ? Come on John, now he is a good bloke. Two replicas and may the best man ( John Able) win. |

Now back in second with a day to go. Looking good for Abel/Taylor with over a two minute lead. Image www.retro-speed.co.uk

What a fantastic result for Wigton Motor Club crews on the RAC 1000 Mile Trial!
Charles Graves/Ron Palmer second overall (Bentley) and Keith Graham/Sue Hoffmann (Bentley) in seventh place. after 7 days of tests and regularities and 1000 miles in pre war cars! Well done all! |

A bit od a silly comment John. Of course these events are nothing like a 200 mile plot and bash of the 80s etc. We live in different times and such events would be impossible, just as this 1000 Mile Trial is totally different from the original.
The top ten cars on this event had some very good navigators while a lot of the others were just there for the jolly! Ron Palmer has a huge number of successes to his name going back nigh on 50 years including a British Championship sitting in with Malcolm Wilson. Keeping these old cars going for 7 days was an acheivement. |

Think I mentioned very early on it wasn't much of an entry due to date and John Able was probably the best team for the event.
Nice to see the interest in these events let's hope it continues. |

Paul Gregory and I ran in the 1000-Mile in his 1936 Invicta 4.5L. It was very well organised and quite demanding - the Regularities and Tests increased in severity as each day went by. Paul and I shared driving/navigating and reached the limit of our competence by Day 4. Our results got better as we went North, and as we went South, so did our placing !
The Abel/Taylor team did really well given that the Lagonda M45 is a long way from the most nimble car, and Martin Taylor is clearly an excellent nav. There was a good mixture of pre-1940 cars from A7s and a Morgan trike to the usual heavy battalion of Bentleys (one or two with PAS ??!) and two magnificent low-chassis Invictas. The Organisers have taken in the comments we all made and will improve it next year - and it deserves a larger entry list next time round. Highly recommended. Nick |

Going to be a problem with Flying Scotsman at beginning of year and now Alpine Trial moving to September.
Hero and Philip Young are the best organisers of this type of Pre War rallies in UK Let's hope the calendar isn't flooded to the detriment of all. |

Pete,
Yes, it sure is. Paul driving on the hillclimb test at Shelsley on a glorious morning. Getting to the hotel at Preston/Garstang in the rush-hour that evening was not quite so enjoyable - pre-war cars are rarely overcooled. Thanks, Nick |

For information:
HERO Summer Trial (May 2014 I think) currently being featured on Motors TV this week, probably at various times. Haven't seen it yet so can't comment but the Scottish Malts programme they did was quite interesting. Also the ERA's Alpine Trial has a four-page report and photos in this month's (September!) Classic & Sports Car magazine. |
