First car on the road
I just watched a copy of the 1983 Scottish Rally, and the commentator on the rally said that running first on the gravel roads, which in this case was Stig Blomqvist in his Audi Quattro, was an advantage to him and a disadvantage to the others behind, like McRae in the Opel Manta & Brookes in the Vauxhall Chevette. Today it is a major disadvantage to be first on the road. Amazing how opinions change.

Maybe it was more a case of 4WD verses 2WD. Even with the Quattro running first & sweeping some of the dirt away it would still have a huge advantage over the opposition two wheel drive cars. Actually it probably wouldn't matter where the Audi had started.
