The Dakar is classed as a "rally raid" - essentially an endurance rally usually involving extreme terrain.
This is the right forum for this subject |

It's got "rally" in the name so it's happiest here

Great event the Dakar, even though it goes no where near Dakar at the moment! Over the years I've lost interest in rallying but this is one event that still captures the imagination. Always look forward to the coverage on Eurosport, helps get through the dark winter evenings!

i understand completely
my motorpsort interests change very often. right now im really into the ability to do anything you want in offroad racing. most of it comes from the smaller funded teams but still. most circuit racing is very much a formula, V8 supercars are identical, rally is limited so much if you try somthing different to get that edge either everyone does it or it gets banned and a fine comes your way. i was looking into building an offroad car, based on a subaru forester and to comply with the production class of offroad in australia. even though it says production and modifications are limited i found i could do a lot more than i expected. |

You Aussies should start Rallycross again. As they do RX in the USA now there could be a World championship sooner or later...

Having a thread about the Dakar gives me a good excuse to post this picture from Rallyday I hadn't seen one of these in the flesh before - it's a bit of an animal!

Great picture, anymore? That's one of the things I like about the Dakar the machinery is a bit more on the extreme side.

The 405 was the only rally raid machine that was out on circuit - usually they have a few more there but this year the rally raid feature seemed to have been canned. They are mad bits of kit though aren't they? A couple more pics:

i was more of a fan of the porsche 595(??) and the old school SWB pajaros of the 80s that competed in ute form in australia |
