That is/was the big problem with Johnny European coming to the UK, no one enforced the rule so they stayed and milked the system.

We should get some respite from brexit news clogging up our in-boxes as a week today is...... Black Friday!

In the words of the great man: 'I don't believe it' the country really is going mad, I've just come home and seen 3 houses in our road with Christmas lights / decorations etc, talk about premature............

The thing is that it is the middle of November, Xmas day is a little over 6 weeks away and so we are, for those interested, very close to the point at which Advent Calendars are first opened. Maybe not so crazy, though to me the whole thing is madness anyway. If your neighbours are thinking they can get the lights set up in mild weather before they get snowed in they may have some logic to their madness. Or maybe this is the only time they have free to do it - perhaps they are all off to sunny climes for the next month or so .... from where they can sit and watch their lights via their security cameras. |

Sorry to take issue, Joe but just where in the 28 member states of the EU is there any oppression? I thought one of the requisites for EU membership was that the member country should have a democratic political system with free elections at regular intervals. Under those principles it's difficult to see where any oppression is rife. Certainly some member state economies are better than others and social security regimes more relaxed but that hardly makes those living in countries with worse economies/social security to be classed as oppressed. I voted leave and that, to me, meant taking both the good and the bad about leaving. The present fudge is certainly not what I voted for and I think Mrs May has made too many mistakes in her tenure as PM and has been pushed around by the EU negotiators (and was actually a remainer) to survive. The pity is that the leading proponents of leave (Boris and Gove) did a swift two steps backwards when Cameron resigned after the result and were not men enough to stand up to their principles and lead the country in it's exit. I am starting to believe that a no deal exit might be the way forward. The current indications are that we will have to pay through the nose, get nothing (other than our freedom) and still have the chaos of a 'no deal'. |

Did you hear that, John? A famous lawyer gave some perfectly legal tricks to protest and jam the trafic. Simple and ecologically correct, people have just to cross the street and do it again at any roundabout. In principle, being pedestrians they have the right to do so and cars won't pass
At last the famous "débrouillardise * la française" also called D system is back again! Enjoyable… |

There’s an interesting feature on the film Quadrophenia in MCN this week. Made 40yrs ago by The Who’s own film company, so an anniversary.... Zef would likely know this, but I didn’t- one of the Scooters used in the film sold for £38k at auction ten years ago! Wow....

Sorry for your loss, John....
I hear on the news that quite a lot of the fluorescent jacket protestors have been injured as drivers try to push through the barricades.....I hope none are seriously hurt. |

Well, errr … lets say people do that at their own risks. Wont be surprised if they finish with several lethal accidents. Not finished yet at 8 PM and must be seriously taken. The government make no fun with that I can tell you. If the fluo jackets are obvious what must be heard is that people are bored. Taxes on gazoline being a pretext. Visible part of a huge an silent iceberg. Am I clear here, Mike, please?

16. What worries did one have in my day. Trying to work out what A levels were all about. Counting the days until I could start driving. The effects of the Vietnam War even though the UK was not involved. Peace and Love and how to achieve the "all you need is Love" dream (briefly, until one realised it was very much a minority dream.) Sex and how to discover it. The Cold War and potential nuclear armageddon. Limits to Growth. (Google it you have not heard of it.) The Approaching Ice Age which, apparently, was all down to human activity according to Scientists who, by the time we reached the mid 70s a few years later, were predicting mass famine and a return to the Dark Ages (Google if your History class at school had not covered the Dark Ages for you) by 1980. Billions to die. Loads of other stuff as well of course but most of it not so different to today for many people - films, music, TV programs, cricket, football and stuff. Oh, and the wonder of watching some very grainy monochrome TV pictures of the first moon landing and the predictions that within a decade or two there woould be large human communities living on the moon and spreading out to the planets in giant spaceships. Just a few of the things one might be pre-occupied with back at that age. I'm sure others will have their own personal memories of the things that especially pre-occupied them at around the same age. |
