I did.

As said before, there is a difference between reviewing to decide to buy and reading in store so you don’t have to.

P38 in workshop has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
I don't know if its exactly the same in the magazine business, but I have a friend who worked in local newspapers for several years and he explained that the advertising generally pays for the paper and the cover price pays for the distribution.I think it would be informative to find how the advertisers reacted to the cover price increase as most of them are sufficiently specialised to lack sensible alternatives and the online readers may well run adblockers in any case.

Let’s not make a big deal out of flicking through the magazines and get back on topic.

Clearly it seems Autosport’s idea to get more people to review content online. It had more to do with that than anything. Thankfully someone high up has seen sense and realised there is little point having extra for the magazine

interesting discussion which i am late to but have an opinion on!

while i might not call it stealing, i do think that once you open up a book, newspaper, magazine (whether it is to review or read) you irrevocably damage that product. if you open it and then dont buy it, it might actually be more akin to vandalism.

but then again i am that kind of person who feels something rewarding by opening up a newspaper or book for the very first time.

i very rarely buy physical copies of anything anymore, but for sure if i see a crease then i am 100% not going to buy that copy. its damaged goods!

We have only ourselves to blame for the print copy problem at Autosport. I was a habitual buyer from the 1950s until about 4/5 years ago when I took out a subscription to the web version. If people stop paying, or avoid paying then the product will disappear. It is up to the provider to make it viable under the pertaining market conditions and lumping the price up to £10.99 was never going to work, that was clear to anyone with a brain. I will continue to subscribe and consider it excellent value for money.

The same is true of high street shops if we buy everything on line the shops cannot continue. Landlords who recognise the problem and keep rents viable are less likely to have empty shops.

On reading in the shop; this annoys me intensely, there is a difference between opening a copy to check if it has a piece you want and deliberately going to the rack to read a magazine, that is premeditated theft. I do always buy the Christmas edition for things like the directory and hard copy of Demon Tweeks catalogue

I subscribe to Muttering Nudes and have done for years. It now seems to be owned/published by Autospurt. Is that going to cease to exist then? If so something needs to be done about it!!!

When I worked in 'The Smoke' I always bought it on a Thursday morning @ Waterloo on the way to work, then had the do not disturb sign on my office door for an hour.

In the early 00's I moved into rural Leicestershire and straight away had problems finding a shop that sold it, eventually making the mistake of subscribing, and then waiting until Friday & often Monday for the Post Office to deign to deliver, I put up with that for a couple of years before going 'online'. Gave that up & now use clubs & the MUK site to keep up to date.
'Motorsport' is the only mag that I now subscribe to, well worth the money (and the wait)

Back in the day when I worked at Team Lotus I was the only who had a copy on Thursday morning, the office copy not arriving in the mail until Friday.

Colin Chapman got wise to this & used to sneak into the office & 'borrow' it. Then, regularly as clockwork, his secretary would return it at going-home time. Long before the days of digital copies, of course.

Simply put, if the product is not doing enough to maintain a steady number of readers the price will go up, then it will die.

I say let it die, any time I look at it now it is poorly put together, has nothing of note to read and is largely a press release weekly.

it is over priced, under full and hopelessly out of touch with the modern world.

Habit is the only reason people really buy it, and believe me it's a very easy habit to kick, you really, really won't miss it.

And if you do stop, you will find yourself finding, better, easier to find news in several other places, and maybe broaden your horizons to other motorsport a little bit.

I certainly fell into the 'buying (well, subscribing in my case) out of habit for years. I eventually cancelled my subscription for the paper copy a couple of years ago but have retained a digital subscription for now, but do find I tend to look at that now less & less...

Seems to have scaled back live coverage of the WRC, when Evans was leading, just another bs F1 article was the top story.

Same again, Evans leading Sweden, and nothing on the main page. They might argue that there simply isn't the interest in the WRC....and they're not the only ones.

I'm not sure it's been discussed on here, but a lot of the ex Autosport employees are now working at The Race - which as well as F1, is covering Indycar, MotoGP, Formula E, plus e-Sports; but both WEC & WRC are not being covered.

I will be interested to see the business model at The Race. All free, some / all premium (paid), advertising funded ?
Building an impressive team that will need to be recompensed.

Oh for the old days when seeing the weekly copy of Autosport was the highlight of a the racing scene, being an Aussie I used to receive my magazine about five days after it appeared on UK newsstands. It was awesome but not as good as when I was posted to work in Sumatra (Indonesia) in 1989 when I arranged for my Autosport to be delivered there where it always arrived on the Monday after UK despite a remote jungle location!

Autosport is to pause publication:

Statement:-

Autosport magazine will be paused following the 30 April issue due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Autosport was first published on 25 August 1950 and has appeared every week since, but the economic realities of the COVID-19 lockdown mean that the decision has had to be made to temporarily pause production of the magazine.

The plan is for the magazine to return in time for the F1 season, which series CEO Chase Carey has suggested will start in July.

From the customer's point of view, no financial impact will be felt. Subscription payments will be frozen. For example, if subscribers have nine months left on their subscription they will still have that time left when the magazine resumes. It is a pause. But reader access to the premium content isn't interrupted.

Our leading writers will continue to work for Autosport.com, where we will boost our content, including articles on national motorsport. We will also be offering a range of benefits to our subscribers - please go to www.autosport.com/covidprint.

Autosport print magazine subscribers will also be granted a free three-month access period to Motorsport.tv.

We would like to thank all the members of staff, who have maintained their customary high standards in difficult circumstances, and who produced seven issues of the magazine from home.

We also thank you, the reader, for your interest and support. We have received many messages in recent weeks thanking us for our continued efforts on the magazine and are sorry that we will not be able to do so for the coming weeks.

The team had many articles lined up, some of which will now appear on Autosport.com and some of which will be set aside for the magazine's return later in the year.

In the meantime, we wish everyone well at this very strange time. Stay safe.

Tells you all you need to know about the current Autosport. That Editorial don’t even know that it’s only published 51 weeks of a year.

A travesty in a press release worried about COVID they didn’t say “published every week, except once a year when we take a break over Christmas after having a bumper issue just before”. They really need to get their priorities right. Dead pedants will be turning in their grave.

This comes across as being a little desperate to find fault.

Yes, but who is to blame ? I suggest the customer - most of whom now rail at paying anything for motorsport news (or Motorsport News ) , even at little more than the price of a coffee from Costa (remember those? we had cafes in olden times).

Ever since F1 and motorsport meant the same thing for many , the magazine lost readers like me who are interested in the whole sport, from club racing and speed events up to F1 . Far fewer people get off their lazy backsides and watch anything live - and exist on the fatty diet of F1 and F1 alone .

Autosport only reflects that - where more prominence is given to a tweet from Lewis , or the demise of a sponsor , than the whole previous weekend's racing here , excepting only Goodwood . Just look at the F 1 forum - page after bloody page about (yawn ) Rich Energy and compare and contrast with national racing content

Shame this had to happen, but it's not really a surprise. At least they are compensating for those who subscribe to the Mag with online content. And it was nice that have put the digital magazine online immediately this morning

it’s a smart business decision - they can provide content through their online presence so what’s the problem?

i think people over-dramatise ~institutions sometimes. the magazine was important for me at one time too but technology has moved on.

Some hilarious comments.

People rail at paying stupid money for nothing content, it is as simple as that, racing magazines, especially weeklies have very little place in the modern world unless they are on subjects people want to read about and motorsport is not one of them.

Plenty of other weekly publications keep going, sadly I stopped buying either donkeys years ago when they became more ads and pictures than content.

Seems I was years ahead of the times. And to be fair monthly magazines are not much better often led by ads, pictures and fluff instead of good hard copy, good writing and decent journalism.

Most of them can be read in a few minutes, MN used to take hours to read.

Good riddance I say. How they lasted this long is beyond me. When a magazine now costs over a fiver, that is what rails people, for hardly any content or much less than it used to have, a pretty picture and fluff. It is that simple, people vote with their feet, and these magazines have been led by the wrong sort of people for decades. If they had been led better they might still be being read.

You also have to add the abject mess up they made with the pricing, online thing some time ago put thousands off and rightly so.
