From TCT -
"Also linked with a return to World Touring Cars is Colin Turkington. Turkington was in the WTCR paddock at the most recent round of the championship at Wuhan, where he was driving with the factory SAIC Volkswagen team in the supporting China Touring Car Championship. The 36-year-old is understood to have a firm offer to join the WTCR, which may be his best option as his BTCC squad West Surrey Racing’s 2019 programme is yet to be confirmed, with BMW UK’s sponsorship deal yet to be renewed." |

Its curious when works teams enter into the BTCC and other series. A quick look at the BMW UK homepage today and there is no mention of the Turkington title, not even a mention of the series or campaign as a whole. Nor does the BMW-Motorsport site have any mention of the BTCC campaign.
I just find it odd that these companies spend thousands to go racing, but then seem shy and not bothered when they actually win something...? |

Possibly because it is a UK dealer supported team, not an official BMW effort. And, even though it's not been updated since 2017, it's on their UK website: https://www.bmw.co.uk/discover-bmw/b...r-championship

I wonder what WSR would do if BMW pulled the plug, would they build new cars? |

There are at least two prior posts on this thread joining the dots about Turkington, which got shunned. Now it appears they were correct.

To compare with WTCR – and I'm loathed to because it's largely a different kettle of fish – that market is slightly different as each producer of TCR cars wants to pay a driver to win and then demonstrate their car is the best to other customer drivers and teams, as opposed to selling more road cars, per se. (Only Hyundai – and maybe VW – seem to be activating that element correctly) |

1 dealer supported team (Alfa) who are not a works team as Alfa paid for nothing.. add into that we have 1 works team (Vauxhall) who probably dont even know they are in BTCC ... to be fair they could make it a bit more clear cut as to what a works team is, how that is different from a dealer backed team and how a dealer backed is different from an independent |

Repeating a rumour in an article doesn't make it confirmed, but there does seem to be mileage in this rumour. |

Yes, believe it. The deal is on the table, it's only a question of is Colin happy with the travel/ disruption to family life.

They'd be running them (maybe less cars depending on sponsorship) as Independents. Just like happened with MG after they pulled out end of '03. Although that was a known known prior to season end '02.

Works support gives more financial security for teams, instead of having to rely on sponsors all the time. Just look at Eurotech for examplem due to a sponsor pulling, they are pulling out too
So it seems this rumour of Turkington to WTCR is gaining some weight now |

the 'sponsor' was jeff smiths own company ICD. so that was just an excuse. the real reason was that as jeff couldnt drive btcc anymore he (very understandably) didnt want to play anymore. cant blame him for that. |

Looking at the company accounts their liabilities have shot up so it might have been time to start looking after the golden goose.

They can still run BMW without any manufacturer backing, or they can spend lots of money building new cars also with without any manufacturer backing. |

Looks like TCT have been reading here 😁 Or maybe just talking to the same guys I have.
Wondering where it all leaves WSR. Rob C could partially fund a car if he or Ricky were to continue, AJ can fully fund a car, who else? WSR is the most expensive seat on the grid I was reliably told a year or two back. |

I guess that Jeff really does need to tighten the business purse strings. He, from what I make of him, would throw all the pennies he could to help his kids.

As seen on TCT - Ash Sutton is to drive in the TCR Europe Final, Turkington is already said to be close to signing up for WTCR.
Could we be seeing the start of the BTCC Talent Exodus? |

I think it's a sign of how highly rated the BTCC is world-wide that its drivers are attracting such attention. |
