I think both of those P51 Mustangs have been subsequently crunched (certainly "Big Beautiful Doll" was crunched, the owner of the other had 2 Mustangs and crunched 1 of them - can't remember if it was "Ferocius Frankie" or "Marinell").
They used to regularly pop in to the airfield near home - the sound of a Merlin engine always gets me searching the sky We're fortunate enough now to get the Aero Legends Spitfires overhead instead. |

We all agree upon the fact that bauble's pics are great, all of them. But the more modern stuff has a lack of charm, Astons excepted, they look less romantic I'd say imo. Its so good to have everything here, not to compare what is not comparable, but any age can be satisfied. Thanks again!

The mystery 500 cc Formula Three car in post 1223 is the Norton powered , 4WD McCandless built and raced by Irishman Rex McCandless .

Rex McCandless had a brother, Cromie who raced Norton's winning the Junior Manx Grand Prix in 1949 ahead of Geoff Duke, and was second or third in the 500cc Senior MGP. He wore a black helmet with a large silver shamrock on the front, the same helmet as the driver of the McCandless when it raced at Goodwood, and I have often wondered if it was indeed Rex at the wheel wearing his brother's crash hat or if it was Cromie himself, as he was the racer of the two. Rex designed a sprung frame for the 500cc Norton motor bike that some one described as like riding a featherbed. Rex gave the design to Norton, and it became known as the Norton Featherbed. Rex was a very clever man. |

EB, did you have a look to the driver's faces or eyes in #1224 pic 1 and 4? Concentrated. The good side of wearing an open face helmet.

I have tried not to be boring, but I have the impression that it is the photographs, perhaps more than the actual cars that most enjoy, so I will carry on sticking up things I like or that make me look like an 'Ace Photographer'. (not something I claim to be, just someone who has been very lucky/privileged to get trackside with a camera.)

Thanks for the info on the McCandless - just done a little bit of reading around and it seems quite interesting and different. I suppose the 4wd on a small 500cc racecar was an experiment worth trying, a bit like FWD on the Bond FJ.

I saw the Bond in action many years ago, at a wet VSCC (?) meeting and was impressed by it's speed in the conditions.

Probably worth trying as you say. FWD in wet conditions provides an advantage. Using from the shelf Panhard elements, the great majority of our DB Racers were FWD.

I expect that some one will be able to name theses FJ's, but they are a mystery to me.

Come on Viva the single seaters were easy, Aston Martin, Gordini, Connaught, Tecmec, Connaught & Ferrari, the juniors in 1248 are a little harder, Elva DKW, Gemini Mk2, Mitter DKW, Gemini Mk 2, Elva 100 & Bond.
