V8's cancel China race
By John Carr
25mar06
V8 Supercars Australia has cancelled its agreement with the organisers of the Chinese round of the touring car championship.

Announcing the decision at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, V8 Supercars Australia's chief executive Wayne Cattach said there had been a number of issues that negotiations had failed to resolve.

"The main one was a suitable date," Cattach said.

"We made a number of suggestions but none of them were acceptable."

Given the 2006 race had already been cancelled, it reads to me like they have cancelled it going forward too - or am I reading too much into it? No year is mentioned.

Who cancelled who's contract ?

I think China is the one whose dodged the financial bullet in this instance.

Makes all of Avescos comments after last years events all the more laughable. I shall seek to find some of those quotes over the next few days.

Its a real problem when there are only 52 weekends a year to choose from. I mean, the F1 sucks up one weekend, so there are 51 to pick from. Not much choice there

When a race loses that amount of money, I dont think it matters what nation or business culture you are working in, the end result is the same.

Did it lose that money or an excuse...I think an excuse. They were not complaining immediately after the event...everyone was happy or seemed to be.

It has not stopped them in the past. China is a fairly stifling dictatorship, that has no qualms about saying things that annoy others.

Robert, it is pretty obvious that this cost the promoter an absolute bomb. They were left high and dry. Holding another event is anyones language would have been business suicide.

D.R.T. it was not obvious, it cost them a "bomb". The Shanghai Tilke designed circuit cost US$600million to build, the cost of holding the V8Supercar race was insignificant. What was not insignificant to the Chinese , was Howard saying this was a great advancement in showcasing Aussie products and sponsors to the Chinese public. So when the US started saying that China had to be "Contained", the Chinese thought logically , that contrary to the Australian Governments public denial, they were in bed with the US and promptly shafted the race. Remember you are dealing with the Communists that run China, not some standalone promotor.. there is really no such animal..in the People's Republic of China.

After spending $600 million, the track needs to bring in paying spectators, tourists, international interest to gain a return on that original $600 million.
No one will continue to keep throwing money down a black hole.

The 2004 event didnt achieve that.
The 2005 event didnt achieve that.
The writing was on the wall and they couldnt get out there any faster.

It is a Conmmunist run enterprise, they DO NOT CARE how much it costs, it is there to promote the "Modern China" to the world...It will NEVER BE Profitable.

Robert, it wasnt promoting "Modern China" to the world.

The event was not working. You cannot lay the blame on the Chinese here.

Bottom line, the race wasnt successful.

This international v8 fandom that we are always being told about, didnt show through, atleast in China. You cant spin that otherwise.

Bahrain will be interesting to see if the same thing happens there.

Two of my favourites after the chinese race last year.

http://www.motorsm.com/motorsport/au...5_R5_China.asp

Tony Cochrane (Chairman, AVESCO ): "In the same way that the street circuit in Adelaide took the V8 Supercar Championship Series to a new level seven years ago, our expansion into the exciting market of China will yet again raise the bar and expectations of the world's greatest touring car category."

Wayne Cattach (CEO, AVESCO): "It is the largest Chinese take-away in Australian history! Seriously, it is a very ambitious project but its very execution opens up the world for our sport. Now we are geared up and ready to travel to any part of the world. For the sport this is an enormous step."

DRT..we are talking about a race paid for totally by a Communist Government. There was international spinoffs from it. There are NO racing fans in China..the idea of the race was to try and generate interest. Others elsewhere did see the race, so it was a SUCCESS. It gave international coverage , for no obvious outlay for AVESCO(V8Supercars), that is something NASCAR can only WISH FOR.

Bahrain has slightly more western tastes than China and yes it is paid for by the Promotors.

Totally agree: It is the logical step for ANY racing organisation in a GLOBAL market, that wants to expand...Every MAJOR racing Organisation or who wants to become a major organisation needs to go Global, to get the sponsors that keep things going. Whether it is NASCAR, WTCC, DTM, CCWS, F1, you name it they are all looking to go global. The world has changed.

The race didnt meet its objectives, so from my perspective it was a failure.

There being no race in 2006 is evidence of that. Success would have seen an event return, it isnt.

Heres another pearler, with the ability of hindsight makes it look a little silly.

"History is being made yet again by the Championship after the
incredible successes of our event in Shanghai in June of this year. To
take this Australian sporting product to the world is an outstanding
achievement.

Our sport is a highly sought after product by these International locations
