Milk is a lot cheaper than champagne, it is more All-American, and it is easier to wash out of race suits?

Not sure where the tradition comes from, but they've been doing it for years.

It's a bugger trying to get a good fizz on it when the time comes for spraying the bottle about....

... I remember Mark Martin having a jolly good try at it one time, though.

Doesn't it go back in some tradition to do with recognition of the local milk farmers? Wern't they all upset when Emmo refused the milk and had orange juice because he owns an orange farm??

Originally, the victory lane milk was buttermilk. It first appeared when Louie Meyer had earlier requested that his wife have it waiting for him following the race, no matter the outcome. It happened to be one of the three 500s he won('28, '33,'36), forget which.

As for Emmo, yes it was a huge deal, don't know why, just replacing the commercialism of the Indiana dairy famrers withn his own product. He later apologized though. However, Emmo did drink the milk after the interview, for the post race promo photos, he just didin't drink it as soon as he got out of the car.
