Nice One, Harri!

Of all the people who rolled their cars yesterday in Cyprus, I thought Harri's was the most dramatic -- and what a good comeback to finish 5th on the day even so!

Harri for WRC!

AND a very respectable 4th place finish -- at least he learned from his error, unlike some people whose initials are C.M. who seem to have strayed into "World Rally's Funniest Home Videos" by mistake!

I am VERY glad neither Colin nor Nicky were injured, but is Colin trying to set some kind of record for rolling his car or what?

Another great result for Peugeot - they now have more points than the other teams put together! Who reckons a 1-2-3-4 in the drivers championship! Odds must be getting shorter!

McRae blew it big time, didn't he!

Gronholm is Mr Consistency once again, while Burns is starting to get to grips with the Peugeot.

As much as I like Colin McCrash, he should probably re-learn when to back off a fraction every know and then. Can Ford install a volume conrol dial in his car? This is getting frustrating...

It's been a while since so many went A over T.

BTW- who wants a WRC Mitsubishi??

Must admit I wondered who would be first with the McCrash comment, but Colin's problem came from relying on the split timing boards (& the fact that someone from Ford obviously hadn't taken his shoes and socks off when calculating the gaps to Marcus). It was by slowing too much under advisement from the team that Colin then had to push harder than he would have liked, hence .

I think the timing boards should be booted out; they seem to cause more trouble than they're worth. Remember Richard went off after reading one in Greece last year & Marcus suffered from a similar basic arithmetic mistake by his team. So let the drivers use their own skill and judgement.

Then again, circuit racers, and motorcyclists seem to have trouble reading their boards.... maybe these guys are in the wrong side of the sport?

I still can't get Alister McRae's crash out of my head...

They explained something about why everyone rolled this weekend but I didn't understand it. They set up the cars higher than usual?

Incidentally, where is Risto? Is he coming back?

The cars are set up higher to allow better ground clearance, more suspension travel etc & so the higher centre of gravity won't help, but I thought most of the rolls were caused by cars dropping into ruts. If the car is going sideways into the corner and finds a rut then the lateral momentum will take the car over, in the same way that circuit racers can roll if they go into gravel traps sideways.

Seems to have gone quiet about Risto; last I heard he was due back

Do the other teams use timing boards (Skoda, Hyundai etc), or is it only those battling for the lead?

Not sure as we never see much footage of them. It's an expensive business as the guy with the board is normally flown in and out by helicopter, so £££s might preclude the smaller teams from doing this.

I e-mailed Subaru on this & got this reply

Dear Simon

Thank you for your letter. Risto is still recovering from the accident in Corsica last year and will return to the co-drivers seat as soon as his recovery is complete.

Kind regards

I was watching TV in Finland the other week and there was a program on Harri and how he is planning life after Rrrrrally. He is setting up a business in Jyvaskyla(?) with friends and some old ski jumper selling speedboats and yachts or something... He is quite old now and i guess retirement is not far off! Sorry Liz!

Quite Old? When he was born around the time I graduated from high school?

That answer about Risto is about as noncommittal as we could have asked for ... one would hope he'll come back as soon as he's recovered, but either he's injured a lot more seriously than they told us (which is of course possible) or he's not playing up. Do you think he'll miss the whole season? I do at this point.

Yes, it's interesting that there's been no news since he was supposed to be coming back for Corsica. I suppose with the Makinen / Lindstrom partnership going well (even if the car isn't finishing ) there is little incentive from the team's perspective to rush him back.

Carlos would have finished well in Catalunya if he hadn't hit a bunch of spectator cars. I admire his restraint for not hopping out and wading into them big time! I would have.
