There was one of the models actually called a "Marathon"
I don't know if they still do the races, but with rear wheel steering it must be difficult at speed. I would think that there must have been a few injuries ?

OK, Gordon, may be the Dafs had a bad reputation, car for disabled or death grandmas but well put together it becomes a very acceptable rally car. There's a thread about this in the area. The dutch club is very active.
One of the best specialist of "la voiture Ã* bretelles" is a frenchman, Claude Laurent.

My good mates at The Chequered Flag (who built a racing car for me 60 years ago when I was 4) did a lot of development work on the Variomatic transmission in F3 using Alexis, Brabham and Tecno chassis. Beckwith (who had a win at Brands), Slotemaker and Widdows were among the drivers entrusted with this cutting edge technology

Saw something similar at a small track in Florida about 10 years ago. At the end of the evening's racing of stock cars and pick-ups the commentator called it a boat race - about 12 cars towing boats on trailers. After half a dozen laps the yellow flag was shown and they opened up the middle figure of 8 and let them go again. It only lasted about another ten laps and last man still towing his boat was the winner. On another occasion they had a school bus race. Hilarious, but no passengers!

Also of course back in the "Special Saloon" days the Daf was one of the cars to modify as "in effect" it had RWD with the transaxle up the tail end. So you could put a Hewland single seater box in the back and with a bit of "grey area" in the engine position you could make an amazing race car that came within the rules. Several people had them and were very competitive. Those were the days of "anything goes" Click image for larger version

I remember that Colin Folwell of Corbeau seats had one back in the day and I seem to remember that Alan Minshaw had it after him ? Perhaps Jason could throw some light on it ? I wonder what happened to it ? Or is it that one ?

I'm pretty sure it was the same one Gordon. The name Tony Hazlewood springs to mind as the original builder and as you say, Colin (Mr Corbeau) then had it.

Not very respectful to refer to the Great Mr Sugden as 'it'!

When I had watched the video I linked the next one suggested was a school bus race.

H&S seemed to have limited application throughout both events.

I don’t think anyone raced the Volvo 343 in the UK, but I believe they were popular in the Nordic equivalent of Special Saloons for similar reasons to the Daf, ie they had a rear mounted transaxle, giving good weight distribution.

Some mates of mine many moons ago dared each other to thrash an old "elastic band" 340 Volvo "scrapper" in reverse around the industrial site. One was pretty good as he had been practising for a while when he found out that they would go as fast in reverse as forward. The other one turned it over within 200 yards

I hesitate to introduce religion into the forum, but being a good catholic boy I regularly attend Mass. Each Mass, Sunday or weekday will be dedicated to various people, maybe a deceased relative, or for some divine help. Last week a certain Delta featured in the dedications, for his 'intentions'!!!!

Iain, is there something I should know?
