I can't see Danny Ric going to Aston. He felt the heat at RBR so jumped ship to Renault. That didn't work so he jumped again to McLaren. Leaving another team under a cloud would be the kiss of death for his career and his reputation, so I don't think it will happen. He just HAS to make it work at McLaren (and it has got better in the last couple of races).

I think Alpine would prefer to put Piastri in a Williams. A character-building time at the back of the grid didn't do George Russell any harm. It wouldn't take much of a change of form for Aston Martin to be competing directly against Alpine next year, and I don't think they would like being beaten by their newbie.

That leaves Nico Hulkenberg as the best candidate. He's keen to come back, he's performed well as a super-sub, he's quick and reliable, he gives good technical feedback and he's a smiley bloke who doesn't throw his teddies out of the pram when things go badly.

Maybe it was less a question of Alonso wanting to commit to Alpine than Alpine maybe not committing to Alonso. I think I read somewhere (thread here; maybe directly above) that the word is Alpine was offering only a single year contract?

It will be interesting to see if Alpine can continue to improve once Alonso's gone and if Aston can benefit from his input, as Alpine have done.
