It’s a windscreen with a halo in the middle of it. I agree, it goes well with this type of car. Being a spec series, they should have no trouble finding a supplier

The HALO is a spec item in F1, so no different.

In F1 the Halo is spec, but each is bolted onto a unique contractors chassis resulting in flicks and fairings to direct airflow.

The Indy car is totally spec so there will be no individuality to the cars.

To say no individuality is inaccurate. There are open parts of the car that are NOT spec and are very much so the focus of development by the top teams. The halo/screen WILL be a spec part produced and provided to the teams and reported by the Indy media after announcing the part. Who and when that will be provided is being worked out as we speak.

With IndyCar adopting Red Bull Advanced Technologies' Aeroscreen, it looks like Christian Horner is trying to get it re-introduced into F1, despite it initially being rejected by the FIA.

Well quite a few in F1 were in favour of it, though not Ferrari. I think it still could be used effectively in F1

I think that fully closed cockpits will happen and it will be interesting to see windscreen wipers on an F1 car, I can hardly wait for the uproar over that one! I guess they will have to have some air conditioning in the cockpit also, how do LMP cars cool the cockpit and driver?

LMP cars have a rule about maximum cockpit temperature and some use air con. This tile has been in place for about ten years.

However this solution has a massive hole in the top, so I don’t think it is needed!

Do they need windscreen wipers with this solution?

I read somewhere that the proposed solution did include demisting and driver cooling / ventilation. Not sure about a wiper, though- maybe they will have to resort to rainX!

I personally would take full cockpit canopy over halo because it's a more complete solution.

LMPs have windscreen wipers and air-con.

no doubt this would be an expensive avenue for development, but a full canopy with an integrated HUD offering telemetry, sensor and imaging data, etc is a future i am interesting in seeing.

road car transferable as well. actually by the time F1 gets around to it they may borrowing from the road cars.

It is already in road cars so F1 would be the borrower but I agree it would be an interesting development.

I have it in my road car. It's good, keep your eyes on the road. Although I don't think F1 drivers need the same info I have. They don't really need to know the speed limit, the sat nav or even what speed they are doing!

What would they have? Change lights? Instructions from the pits? Lap deltas?

Race control message box like in LMPs would be quite good. But does it really need to be a HUD?

It doesn't need to be a HUD, but given how re-profiled an enclosed cockpit would be, why not declutter the steering wheel. The standardised ECU would limit what can be displayed, so the same for all teams. And yes race control messaging.

without wishing to open any more can's of wriggly things, if it was a standardised helmet then perhaps, but given Aria, Bell and Schuberth to name but three manufacturers it helmet projected imagery would start a whole new expensive race to minimal gains.

Lets let the helmet folks do what they do best and continue to improve the main role of the helmet.

In the cost sensitive world that F1 are moving into to, then a standardised HUD giving standardised ECU controlled information to me is an option. Tie that in with cost cutting measures of reducing live ship-to-shore telemetry and therefore the amount of information available to the driver.

I was thinking a direct data stream from which the drivers would need to call up any data relevant to them (tire temps, fuel usage, deltas, engine health etc) with the aim that drivers dont need that info coming from the pit wall... essentially im thinking of adding data manipulation and interpretation to the driving challenge.

Off in the future perhaps even the ability to view sensor data from other cars (imaging of an opponent's heat signature for use in rain type thing).

So basically expensive sci-fi stuff.

If you include HUD in the helmet, you need to have electronics in the helmet as well. Not sure it is a good idea to plug solid objects and add weight into the crash protection.

Modern electronic components weigh very little. A Samsung S10 smart phone weighs 157g. HUD, as well as HMD (Helmet Mounted Display), have been used with military aircraft for many years and some military aircraft, notably jet fighters, can pull very high G forces and this will have been taken into account, when designing the helmet.

If the Halo didn't prove itself last year at Spa with LeClerc, then it surely proved itself in F3 with Alex Peroni. Luck still plays a part though as if he had landed such that a fence post was in the way, the halo would not have protected him.

I therefore believe that closed cockpits are inevitable.

I love the open cockpit nature of F1 and other open-wheeler series. I thought the Halo would detract from the overall aesthetics of the cars yet accepted that it is needed from a safety point of view. I don't even register them now except when onboard and even then it's not a nuisance, just another part of the car.

I expect it to be much the same with a closed cockpit as long as it provides a clear view of the driver at work from outside the car.
