Comparing where the two were at Valsecchi's stage in his career, there's no question that Kovalainen was the far more convincing prospect, so his comment is ludicrous.
Heikki is the superior driver. But Valsechhi speaks the truth, he is not a great champion.

But his comment makes himself sound like a great champion , that is the point.

It doesn't, he's just saying that Kovalainen is hardly Schumacher. I dunno how such an innocuous comment has got so many people talking.

Vslsecchi's F1 career is over surely. A year as a third driver is as good as it gets.

He's upset but look at the context of the interview. He admitted he was inexperienced and needed to get it somehow - a valid point as F1 opporunities are hard to come by for junior drivers. Imagine if Toyota had replaced Glock with Ralf instead of Kobayashi for those two races in 2009. That would have been a bummer.

That was my reading of his remark, and seeing what his replacement managed, I would certainly give Valsecchi a drive in Brazil!

The F1 teams should be forced to run the pay driver they have nominated, no ifs or buts!

Currently the term third driver has no meaning at all!
