Anyone got a KA or an opinion on them?

I am about to get a small 'runaround' car for me and the missus and out of all the one's at the cheaper end of the market I fancy the Ford KA. At the mo, under £5K for a brand new basic one!

Normally I hate Ford's, but I fear buying a Micra or Corsa will turn me into an old man prematurely.

Has anyone got / had a KA? If so, any comments?

I've checked the on-line reviews which appear quite good, but then again, they are normally written by someone who has never owned one / maintained one or driven it at high revs!

PS. My other car is a Lotus Elise

Ugly as an ugly thing but I've heard good things about them from unlikely sources- my parents hired one once and my Dads initial impression when he first sat in it was that he shoudn't stretch his legs out too much for fear of kicking the headlight out! After a couple of days he did quite enjoy driving it!
Fancy joining us in the road car forum?

Nooooooo!!! Don't do it!

It is butt ugly, but also I've been in one as a passenger. The engine sounds awful at anything abouve 3000rpm.

Urgh, ugly, ugly, ugly. I just cringe whenever I see one!
Also on the topic of ugly, I saw two of the new Micras on the road today, truly hideous looking things.

Ugly, tinny, lacking in door trim so it feels like sitting in a tin can, and bloody scary at anything like a decent speed!

Why didn't they ever introduce a proper sports version like the other ranges? I always wanted to see a Ford Ka-Si

Interesting style to them, but a truly awful motor.

Are they crash-worthy? (rear end looks insubstantial, but could just be a styling illusion)

Wow! Thanks chums! Almost as much vitriol as a MS bashing thread!

So, to sum up the general feeling ... Girlie, small, not good at high revs and ugly!

But, come on guys - its only £4995 BRAND NEW - what do you expect!

OK! ... So, what would you suggest instead. Help me be practical around town and cool!

In my view everything else would require me to wear biege corduroy trousers, a Pringle golf jumper, sandals and watch Countdown every day.

I think I'd rather be called a 'ugly girl' than an 'old fart'!

I borrowed a friend's Ka and it had lovely steering (just what an Elise owner might look out for) and a smooth gear change - comfortable enough too - he used it daily to commute into the city - no problems - and sold it for a lot less than planned - five grand also buys a seicento which if its as good as the cinquecento we've now had for nearly ten years would also do a good job albeit perhaps with a little less comfort - isn't there a cheap Skoda or Citroen too ? Actually no forget that the C3 is apparently really badly built

Try them & let us know !

I used to race againt what was then (perhaps still) the only racing KA in the world. It was a nice bit of kit too, sounded great but... it was driven by a girl, now being a specced up class b ford saloon it was VFQ but as even that was driven by Julie Hassell (no detriment) its a girls car

What sort of engine is in the one you're looking at getting? I've seen the KA described as "A fine mini in search of a modern engine".
http://www.carsurvey.org/review_19531.html

But I think that was refering to the old 8-valve pushrod engine and maybe that's finally been replaced. I hope so.

Some car makers go for the retro look with modern mechanical components, but the Ford KA seems to go for very modern styling and retro under the bonnet!

Hopefully this "retro" feature will have been replaced by now

Regarding the racing KA..... there's at least one here in NZ doing the odd hillclimb etc. I couldn't believe it when the guy opened the bonnet and there was this poxy old crossflow engine - I thought the original had blown up and he had stuck an old pushrod/crossflow in there, but then he told me that was the original!!!!!

They're okay as a second car, but not a 'main' car. I was well unhappy last year when t'other half buggered off to snetterton in my Mondeo, leaving me to go to Curborough in her Ka.

I think they're nice wee cars. Get one.

And at 4995 it's great value - just a squeeze more than twice what I'm paying for my bloody scooter.

My mom has one that I drive regularly.

I think it is a fine car. We've never had any trouble with it.

I think I heard something about something called a sportKa that is supposed to go into production. I once made it around a pretty tight corner without braking (I forgot!) so I'd say the normal one handles well anyway. You can get up to 60 km/h in first gear if you want to, but it will sound funny and your sister or someone similar to a sister will want to get out of the car and walk home.
