Salo has a contract with Lotus for 95 and David Hunt, who had taken over Team Lotus tried to use that contract to make him drive for Pacific Team Lotus instead of Tyrrell

Johnny Dumfries could have stayed in F1 in 1987, but he couldn't agree with Tyrrell.

Retro Silly Season
He also tested with Benetton prior to that season, hoping to get a race drive there, but Boutsen got it instead

As well as Ligier and AGS, Pironi was also linked to Larrousse for an F1 return

Olivier Panis was one of the few candidates for the 1996 Ferrari drive alongside Schumacher. That would be really interesting to see. Panis was very good before his accident.

According to Mark Blundell he had a deal in place to drive for Sauber in 1996, however Red Bull only wanted to work/continue with Sauber if they had a GP winner in the car. Which Blundell wasnt, Herbert was and he got the drive in the end.

Kevin Cogan was a possibility for McLaren for 1980, he tested the car in Paul Ricard alongside Watson and Prost.

And Prost himself was linked to Ligier, Lotus and Brabham for 1980, as well as McLaren

Actually Tambay-despite scoring no points in 1979-was still a candidate to keep his seat for 1980 at Mclaren. Mclaren planned a shoot-out between him and Prost, but Tambay refused, so the seat went to Prost.

Cogan was also tested alongside Prost though. So there was a chance for him to be there too

After Gunnar Nilsson got diagnosed with cancer, Ian Scheckter was originally going to drive the second Arrows in South Africa, but Rolf Stommelen persuaded the team to take him instead having offered loads of money for the drive

Ivan Capelli, after a tragic 1992 season at Ferrari was linked to move to Scuderia Italia for 1993, where he signed anyway for '92, but got up to the Maranello team

It has nothing to do with this thread, but let's pray for Alex Zanardi. He is a real life superhero. I was just listening to his podcast on YouTube, then heard the horrible news. I can't really find the words actually.
He is a great driver, a great fighter and an exceptional human being. |

I heard the podcast too and he revealed that he was going to get the Benetton drive in 1991 Italian GP if they couldn't get Schumi
Get well soon Alex, fingers crossed. |

And on the podcast with Patrese, he revealed that it was either going him or Jones that was gonna partner Nilsson at Arrows in 78, as both were with Shadow in 77 and Patrese was also linked to the Williams seat Jones eventually got
He also reveals Ferrari wanted a lineup of him and Senna around 90-91, helped by the fact Riccardo had raced for the team boss Cesare Fiorio in sportscars for Lancia |

Éric Bernard was one of many who was linked to Williams for 1991. Imagine him getting the ride instead of Mansell.

When Senna died, Williams were considering replacing him with Warwick, Comas or Patrese, but in the end test driver Coulthard got the seat.
Also when Jordan sacked Capelli, Coulthard and Gounon were candidates to replace him. |
