Adelaide 500 - CAMS IOnvestigatory Findings
CONFEDERATION OF AUSTRALIAN MOTOR SPORT (CAMS)
PRESS RELEASE 10 May 2002 For Immediate Release 10 May 2002 CAMS STATEMENT 2002 V8 Supercar Championship Series - Clipsal 500 A CAMS Investigatory Tribunal has found that the extra lap awarded to car 34 for having been incorrectly held behind the safety car at this year's Clipsal 500 in Adelaide was, in all the circumstances, an over compensation. Delivering its findings last night, the Tribunal reduced the allowance to half a lap, amending the Race Results accordingly to show that car 34 finished in 6th position. Under the provisions of CAMS National Competition Rule 171, an inquiry was held on 15 April 2002 to investigate the Stewards determination made during Leg 1 of the 2002 Clipsal 500 to credit car 34 with a lap following the deployment of the safety car. The Tribunal's findings are subject to appeal. |

Comes back to the Race Director and the Stewards for this type of decision - RD for placing him in where he did and the Stewards for giving him an additional lap.

Race Director for all V8 meetings is TS with Garth Wigston and Peter Wollerman as the two primary, permanent V8 Stewards.

And now, Gary Rogers has issed a media release stating that unless AVESCO/TEGA basically 'ignore' the Investegatory Tribunals Result he (and therefore stick with the original one lap credit given to Tander) he will instigate legal proceedsing against AVESCO/TEGA.
Interesting in the release is this snippet: "I am completely at a loss to know why CAMS would do this other than to appease the Race Director Tim Schenken who had apparently been concerned that he had made a mistake in Adelaide," Rogers added. What a sticky situation this is...Garry Rodgers on one side of the arguement and from what I've seen Larry Perkins on the other - sometimes I think these are the only 2 guys that have read the rulle book the way they're always carrying on when rules are broken.

This will, actualy, be quite an interesting one as in effect Rogers is arguing that the AVESCO/TEGA rules can override the NCR's and FIA rules and regulations - and all along CAMS have stated that the pecking order is FIA, NCR's then series regs - the lower in the order a rule is, it can only add to or explain a higher up rule NOT change it.
If this succeeds, CAMS could be in a lot more trouble than appears on the surface. |

Congratulations Racetime!
It highlights the point that the order behind the Safety Car must be right before they pull it off the track. It is impossible to retrospectivley right any wrongs after the green flag is waved. |

Interesting point about the pecking order.
I'm not sure that the boys on Dandenong Road want anyone to challenge that right now.............. |

True. The other problem highlighted by this is that safety car intervention has to happen *immediately* it is called - pull out infront of the first car to come past and THAN analyse the situation and start sending cars through.
This is where CAMS have got it all screwed up - they do NOT understand (or even appear to want to understand) the use of an Intervention Car. NASCAR/CART have got this down to a fine art but the stupid bloody-mindedness of CAMS officials that refuse to use US categories for help is one of the prime reasons for all of this. It isn't just V8's that have this problem - Super Tourers and ProCar have had numerous problems with safety cars simply because the Race Director at the time (or the pressure exerted on him by the series organiser) has not had the balls to stand back and say 'Hang ono - lets delay another lap or two and get this right...' |

Bloody colonials.
They always have to try and figure everything out for themselves. |

Nothing to do with colonials really - it boils down to a 'We are better than anyone else - we don't need ANYONE to show us what to do' - and they keep this up until the ****e hits the fan!

Just so I have this clear in my head, is this similar to what happened during the Bathurst 1000 in 1996? On that occasion, didn't Gardner and Perkins get held behind the Safety Car near the end of the race that effectively left them a lap down?

I believe so BUT, the difference here being that in Adelaide attempts were made to rectify the situtaion - and stuffed up in the process.
I can't recall the Bathurst details so can't cokmment on wether what was done was right or wrong (neither Gardener - in particular - or Perkins being drivers I would go out of my way to help I never really followed this one up) |

Probably could if there was not some big legal battle going on. Last thing I want is to be dragged into this one.
