Senna's best race!
Simple. Which was Senna's best race? I've narrowed them down to ten, but feel free to ask for others to be added and we'll put them on and you can vote for that.
The choices are: 1984 Monaco (a possible win) 1985 Portugal (the first win in awful conditions) 1986 Spain (closest F1 finish for ages) 1986 US (sublime street craft) 1988 Belgium(Prost and Mansell less than 2s behind) 1988 Japan (the drive to win the championship) 1989 Monaco (38 laps without 2nd gear...) 1992 Monaco (another close one with Nige) 1993 European (that is Donington!) 1993 Australia (the last win, Prost second) That list seems to suggest he had a lean patch in 1990-1991 Just the difference between very good and great I suppose (in 1991 the first 3 victories all came with mechanical woes IIRC). Judging by the other thread this may be a foregone conclusion! Get voting... Last edited by Adam43; 22 Apr 2004 at 22:30. |

Well, Adam, my favorite Senna race is not in the list. Senna did not win that race but the driving display that I saw was just incredible.
Silverstone 1993... a chilly cloudy day. Senna's car was no where near the Williams but I saw the best start I have ever seen from any driver.. a true rocket start. I was at Copse with a bunch of friends and when we saw Senna come out front we were like SHOCKED and jumping with joy. And boy how Senna blocked Prost and Schumacher for those laps. I mean it was pure joy. I have never seen such brilliant car control from any driver (I have seen Gilles, Rosberg, Prost, Regazzoni, Mika... all greats of 80s and 90s). Silverstone 93 is my favorite race of Senna. |

Donington 1993, enough said.
I rank Suzuka 1988 as a second, after bad start he was able to catch everyone and won. |

Yeah, Donington 93 was at least the best start I've seen in a long time.

MOnaco 84.
I voted it a bit doubtfully, cos' I wouldn't like it to seem that I saw Ayrton career as a descending curve, but i'm always fascinated by those who perform stunningly with uncompetitive cars. |

Where's his victory in Brazil '91 where he was stuck in 5-6th gear for the last 12, possibly more, laps?
I'd vote for that one. Last edited by ASCII Man; 23 Apr 2004 at 07:46. |

I voted 85 Portugal, even Senna rated it higher than Donnington which itself was a masterclass and I'm hardly in a position to disagree with the man.
Brazil 1991 was also magnificent and it was victory in Brasil, a dream!!!!! |

USA or Brazil 1991 for me , for sheer class I'd say USA but for effort you'd have to say Brazil , stuck in gear the rain starting to come and I believe he also cramped up very badly but fought through the pain.
so i guess i will vote for Brazil 91 |

Thanks, Adam, for adding Silverstone 93. The GP was memorable for me as I was there and enjoyed it tremendously.

It's tough to pick just one! You could say Suzuka 1988 because he came from the back after an error with so much at stake, or any of the Monacos (particularly 1992 which was stubborn iron will) or Donnington. RWC- eben though he had a wet car, doesn't that somehow show more intelligence and forethought to be better prepared for the race?
I really can't choose- the memories are so good though. |

Donington '93 ...no question about it. The combination of changing weather, pits stops & a car powered by an underpowered Ford Cosworth & Senna still won!
Truly the most amazing race of his career & quite possibly one of the best races ever in the history of grand prix racing. |

Brazil 1991 was his hardest race physically .....understandably so, he was stuck in 6th for absolutely ages. In eventually damp conditions, on slicks. Phew! I think you could bracket Kyalami 1984 with this race, where he drove with a broken front wing on that famously quick track. This was at a time when he wasn't that fit too, so it was amazing he finished. I think it was in the points as well.
However, Portugal 1985 has to be his best race. More difficult conditions than Donington 1993 and with a turbo car which had no traction control or active suspension and a manual gearbox. Great stuff! |

Portugal '85 for me too. Appalling whether, the pressure of not having a win under his belt up to that point and the fact that he had to control the best part of 1000bhp with his right foot . We miss you Ayrton.

1 from 3: Portugal 1985, Suzuka 1988 and Donington 1993.
Apparently Ayrton didn't rate Donington 1993 as highly as some of his earlier successes as he had traction control. (though so did the Williams) |

I wouldn't go for Silverstone 1993 for similar reasons to hwy you would Freud! I thought Ayrton's driving bordered on the desperate and downright unfair, especially (surprise, surprise) against Prost.
For me it's between Portugal 1985 and Japan 1988. I'll go for Japan because to win a race from that far back - essentially in the dry - when there is a championship at stake is really quite amazing. That day, he did beat Prost fair and square. As Senna, himself said, 'it's the way one dreams of winning a championship'. |

I voted for Portugal 1985. I think most drivers would rather be in the traction control and active suspension McLaren Ford at the start of a damp Donington 1993 than the turbo Lotus Renault at the start of a monsoon Estoril 1985.

Was Donington 1993 really that exciting other than the first lap? Great performance from Senna but I wouldn't exactly use the word 'exciting' to describe that race. |

oh it was. It was incident filled from start to finish and to be honest that wet weather master class from Senna was enough to keep anyone watching.

The British weekly racing magazine AUTOSPORT, after asking their readers for their best Senna race ever, AUTOSPORT has announced the best Senna race ever selected by the readers was the European GP at Donington in '93...by a whopping 64.6%!
There was no other race even close. Personally, I fully agree...the first lap, in the rain, was utterly amazing: 5th to 1st & with the constant changes in the weather & the numerous pit stops... |
