Because of travelling I decided to leave the 500 at home (just too much to haul everywhere) so I went with a 300f2.8 and a 1.4 for the rain shot, the Eric shot is a 300f2.8 as is the Aaron Yates shot (all hand held as I really find a monopod restricting and only start to use it when I feel the old elbows starting to complain) and in all honesty you can get get "dangerously" close to the action (not that I do because if I got killed my wife would be so mad at me and in reality it's just not worth it...). I simply check with the corners workers (they have the last say) and ask them how far can you go (common sense will/should tell you but it's always good to check).
