Daewoo Series

What is happening with the Daewoo's this year, i thought the series was meant to be part of the PowerTour, but they weren't at Oran Park nor have i heard much from them, nor from the MGF one make series for this year.

Anyone know what is happening?

This year they are running as a club series at NSW State Championship rounds, I believe. They had a meeting at Eastern Creek a few weeks ago.

As Crash said - Daewoo Series at club level - MG's supposedly on the V8 Series program, but haven't heard much about it either.

http://www.hve.com.au/

The only place I could find info about the MG series was on the competition page for last years Chance Of A lifetime http://www.chanceofalifetime.com.au/

I haven't bothered looking up the results from Eastern Creek, but by reading Garry O'Brien's report about it in Auto Action, it seems as though most of last year's Daewoo punters are still in them. I was kind of expecting many of them to move up into the MGs...

Too costly? WHat is it? Around $45,000 for the MG series?

Dunno, but the Daewoo series did look very cheap this year- was it $10K? But still, for $45K, you do get to play in front of the V8 crowds...

Pfffttt.... but as Prancing Horse have shown, there are a lot of people out there (with a lot more money than I'll ever see) to spend on motorsport!

Yeah - but now you are comparing Ferrari's to MG's - which would *you* take if you had the money?

Just checked - the Daewoo's don't have their own race either - http://www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/re.../2002.ARDC.R15 they are combined with Touring Cars....obviously to make up a reasonable grid.

These one-make series are only ever temporary things. They cannot survive for long, and really shouldn't be there in the first place, distracting potential competitors from real racing categories.

ay - for not being able to survive very long they have been going for a long time already - 8 years or so now - even longer than that really. Mazda 323's started it from memory (didn't Skaife drive one of these things??)

Like em or not, whilst a manufacturer is around to push their models, one make series will stay.

I like one make series, apart from being cheap and a good entry level series, it is even and the good drivers should stand out.

Why has the series gone to only a state level series this year?

Still... a lot more people would be able to afford an MG instead of Ferraris- perhaps the MGs are priced more to appeal to Mirage competitors?

And WHAT is that field? Seems to be a combined Saloon Car, Street Sedan, Daewoo race-what-ya-brung field. How big are Saloon Cars in the Southern States?

But how about the Geminis- 22 years old, and still going strong (enough). Sure, there has been a complete driver turnover (only one driver from the 1998 season is still competiting), and the grids aren't as strong as they were when the class would get on the ATCC programs, but they still have good fields and great racing.

Entry to what? The MG Series?

This is the hogwash that we hear so often, and I suspect that RPM is probably the reason the Daewoos have kept on so long. Lasers lasted about two seasons, and Skaife would have started somewhere else if they hadn't been there.

You'll buy a fair dinkum race car for less, maintain and run it for less and have more races with that in a given season. Not to mention have more fun and go faster.

You could probably do all that for less money than the Daewoo's, but the good thing i find about the Daewoo's is that it is just turn up and drive, if the driver doesn't know all about preparing a race car and just wants to race, they still can

Yeah, I really enjoy the one make series. Mirages, Daewoos, HQ Holdnes. Usually close racing.

Not always, didn't Charles Dequino win a HQ race at Eastern Creek by 14 seconds the other week.

Yes and did it quite easily at OP last week 3 from 3 and no one ever closer than a few seconds. But that is why I said "usually".

I fail to understand why people call something like the Daewoo series cheap. Heck it's 15 grand start up money, i could race my car for three seasons on that, or build three new ones!

Well, people are too lazy to prepare their own cars, and not too many folk will donate their labour for free. Daewoos aren't cheap (), and they used to run on a decent package, all over the countryside, with decent TV.
