Assuming you mean the Historic Sports Car Club - have a trawl into the Press Releases forum, there is something there that you will find useful.

Hope you don't mind Robyn, but have amended title slightly to reflect the organising clubs initials (and as referred to by Ian). Cadwell is my local circuit and I love historics anyway, so hopefully I'll be there. According to the MotorSport calendar, there will be races for the Miller Oils Historic FJs, Historic FF1600s, Classic F3, Classic racing cars, Classic Sports cars, HRSRC (Historic saloons), Historic Road Sports, 70's Road Sports, and Jaguar XKs. Sounds good to me!

Yes, indeed, I'm sorely tempted to go to both but probably a bit excessive (or is that obsessive!).

Alan, I think that it just evolved. According to Peter Swinger, a Mr Mansfield Wilkinson bought the land in 1926 for the sport of 'shooting'. However, his son, Charles, had other ideas and persuaded his Father to allow motorcycle racing to take place there. Much later on Charles purchased some adjacent land and the circuit which had already been extended on a couple of previous occasions, was extended further to the current layout. I suppose really we can thank Charles Wilkinson for all of it but whether he was solely responsible for the circuit layout, is another matter!

Driving on the roads around it you can see how it probably just evolved

It was an unpleasant wet morning for practice but thankfully, brighter and dryer for afternoon's racing. I've cobbled a few pictures together from yesterday's excellent meeting, starting with Brian Ashby's rare (unique even?) Emeryson F1:-
The usual crowded pre scrutineering scene:- Simon Benoy's Sunbeam Imp exiting the Hairpin, during practice:- How Jamie Boot managed to put the his V8 TVR Griffith on pole ahead of a number of sports racing cars, in the wet, only he knows! Fellow front row man, Simon Hadfield, however, made no mistake in the race and ran away and hid on a drying track in the Elva Mk8. Jamie still came an excellent 3rd beaten also by Philip Nelson's well driven Marcos 1600GT. A few more pics to follow! |

There were some lovely cars in the Classic Racing Cars race. Frank Lyons (Merlyn Mk10) made a superb start from 3rd on the grid to lead for a few laps before poleman Matthew Watts (Brabham BT16) reasserted himself at the front of the field. This left Frank to have a race long battle with Ian Gray (Brabham BT30) who pipped him for second by seven tenths of a second. Here the two charge the mountain:-
The winner, Watts, is congratulated and interviewed by Marcus Pye:- Colin Sharp (TR4A) merits our sympathy:- After qualifying a fine 7th, he lost it in a big way (possibly on his own oil?) exiting Barn, at the end of lap 2, causing considerable damage to the front end of his car. The accident brought out the red flag. Marcus decided on a impromptu interview of a few of the drivers formed up on the grid whilst Colin's car was gathered up, and left his microphone on whilst he ran down the flights of stairs from the commentary box. I was immediately transported back to the radio Goon shows and their sound effects! The finale to that was a magnificent straddle of the armco (sorry Marcus, if you ever read this - just couldn't resist!). Finally, for this set, a thing of beauty. The Lotus Elite of Brian Arculus:- Last edited by John Turner; 24 Apr 2006 at 13:36. |

Yes, I read about the scrutineering fun you all had Castle Combe, Zef! It's all relative, of course, and in my earlier pic. they hadn't actually started the scrutineering. This was what it looked like further back in the queue:-
Alex Meek's Merlin Mk20A in the foreground. It gives you a flavour anyway! |

I'm sure it was busy, I seem to remember that, like CC, the Scrute queue crosses the park ferme queue and all hell breaks loose as everyone is in 'panic panic I'm racing' mode

Last set:-
Formula Junior second row which produced the winner in Mark Woodhouse with Lotus 20. Alongside, Duncan Rabagliati's Alexis HF1, known apparently as 'The Flying Carrot (can't think why!) which qualified well ahead of where it should be presumably due to Duncan's wet weather abilities:- HSCC 70's Roadsports Grid from row 5 backwards:- Another race where neither front row men managed to convert their qualifying into victory. Bob Bullen in the Anglia had an early off and eventually retired with a puncture and poleman, James Dodd, pulled into the pits from the lead early on in the race with some mechanical malady. It was left to the second row to capitalise and Les Ely duly delivered in his BMW, chased home by the well driven Lotus Cortina of Jonathan Gomm:- And, better include a picture of the FF1600's, before Ian Sowman complains. Here we have Westie Mitchell (Merlyn Mk20) and John Bladon (Merlyn MkIIA) on the grid togther which is surprising since Weslie qualified 5th and John 10th according to the timing sheets. Might explain why Westie is looking in his mirror and John talking to a marshal on the pitwall! Surely I wasn't the only 10-Tenther spectating. Don't let me be the only poster that attended!
