Larko: "JDR cars sound like V12s"
I haven't heard it up close 'n personal but Mark Larkham was saying in the commentary that the JDR cars sound more like 'V12s' as a result of using an elaborate header system.
Larko thinks the header system "should be banned" because they don't sound like V8s. Those comments had me perplexed. Any thoughts? |

He can't have been listening to too many V12s then, can he?
The Kelly cars souond different alright but they still sound like V8s and like no V12 I have ever heard. |

They will be pulsed pipes run in the engines firing order, they sound awesome I reckon, a real throaty growl - very impressive

The "banned" comment was a joke.

Correct, Correct and Correct. Actually, I think Larko was answering a viewer's question. You mean, like this?... http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b8...nk/Headers.jpg Mods, I hope including the above link doesn't contravene any forum rules. Please remove if necessary. |

they sound nothing like a V12 IMO but everyone including the viewer is entitled to their opinion. they sound different and it's good, at the track you can tell each different teams motors/exhaust system has it's slightly different sounds when it comes past you but you can pick the Kelly car a mile off and it's great to have something different like that.
when these headers first came out last year i thought they sounded like **** but it's grown on me and i actually really like it now. |

I think it is more than the headers. I recall e mention of the firing order being changed to sequential too...

Made for a very "Euro"-sounding note, rather than the grunty old V8 beasty noise of which we're all so fond...

Yes, that old school grunty note, which wins all the races.

Sounds like the old Cozzy V8's from the '70's era F1 machines.

Whatever they've done, it sounds awesome.
As for Larko's comment about banning the system. I think that it could be sour grapes for him, as I remember his team did experiment with a different exhaust system for a while, circa 2002-2004. |

Still don't sound anywhere near as good as the Bathurst 99 DJR cars! On MMM radio on sunday they had a countdown of the best driving songs in honour of Bathurst, in between songs they were playing sound clips of famous Bathurst moments. They played Dick Johnson's 1983 Hardies Heros lap, the sound of that 351 climbing mountain straight is one of the sweetest sounds ever! Just listen! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMJsGG0QOIU |

One of the best things about the V8s is that they can all be made to sound different, unless they are forced to use the same equipment (parity). How boring would that be? |

They sound simply magnificent...
More like a f1 v8 than a good ol' boy grunty v8, and all the better for it. |

Similar noises seemed to have been eminating from the SBR cars at Hamilton in 2008,a different sound to the other Fords,at the time...
That you tube clip...from Driver TBA... Dicky J's Clevo climbing the mountain 26 years ago sounds like it may have been spinning a bit quiker than the 72hundred odd RPM used today as well...SWEET MUSIC... And the trees...I can't help but be struck with the memory of Peter P...[Brocky,MHRIP]...Fond memories of him "talking us through a Bathurst lap"...and the 2 secong rule. This is motor racing ...It takes no prisoners, does it? |
