A superb race. Wonderful Grand Prix.

It even had a surprise winner in these guys: This is the team that Eddie Jordan announced as the winners on the podium anyway.

Actually, although I don't agree with him on that, I am with him that the "Stewarts" (sic - I don't think it's Sir Jackie or Paul's fault) were a bit harsh on two racing incidents. Kudos to Daniil Kvyat for not blaming Hulkenberg.

Apart from that, what excellent stuff to watch. What a racer Niki Lauda is! Despite being a Mercedes boss, even he seemed happy enough that Ferrari had won and have made a bit of a fight of it. It seems that Mercedes were not confident in their tyre usage because they had to stick the hards on at the end. I'd like to look again at how Rosberg was running on the mediums in his final stint.

Conversely, what excellent conservation of tyres by Ferrari in the heat. It'll be fascinating to see if this is peculiar to these high track temperatures or if we'll see more of this sort of thing. It's clear that Ferrari have built a decent car this year. Look at Raikkonen's comeback.

Wow. Verstappen even sounds like a teenager in his voice but he drives in a rather seasoned way. A slip-up coming into the pitlane but he held it together. An excellent result.

A poor race by Red Bull. They're all at sea at the moment and it's clearly not all the Renault engine.

Alonso made a decent start to the race getting by Button and Perez, but what do these drivers know that we don't about the car? So it apparently handles well, but any car does if it's not on the limit. I'm dubious.

Rosberg just can't race as well as Hamilton. It took slip-ups from Grosjean and Ricciardo for him to get past them, whereas Hamilton scythed past them. He did win the prize for least-tired-looking driver on the podium, though.

Maldonado wins the Maldonado Trophy.

I loved Bottas's pass on Massa. After their touch in Turn 1, he bided his time and patiently awaited his overtaking spot that I'm sure he had in mind. Williams are having another decent season.

There seems to be a clear pecking order at the moment - Mercedes, Ferrari, Williams, then are Toro Rosso possibly emerging consistently ahead of Red Bull, at least for now?

Red Bull really screwed up. Horrific understeer and it looked like someone had just swept a chimney every time they braked for turn 1. There's no way Horner can put the blame solely on Renault now.

Mick Doohan was a steward? What would he know? Might as well hire a tennis star or an ex soccer player or something. Some dumb decisions from that quarter too.

For me, Vettel seemed genuinely ecstatic for the first time with a win. It's good to see that.

That looks suspiciously like a Scuderia Italia, Dallara 192 - Ferrari.

Why Mike Doohan? I hope this isn't some trend or gimmick dreamt up by the powers that be in F1. Afaic, Doohan got the call totally wrong on Perez; that was a racing incident.

I have to agree with Eddie Jordan, who towards the very end of the BBC's broadcast criticised how quickly a decision to award a penalty is now given.

Big difference between bikes and cars if there is a touch of wheels, I wonder did that influence the decisions made or maybe one of the other stewards wanted to be sen to do something?

So he did. In all the excitement of Vettel's first win for Ferrari, I missed that first time round but saw it on BBC iplayer and to be fair I'm sure EJ got caught up in the excitement as well, hence the faux pas.

Seems to me the MB tire issue started with wasting a set of meds in Q1. When Hammie complained about the wrong tires after his stop I could have sworn I heard "all that we had left was well worn mediums". I seem to recall also, that MB have been relatively hard on tires for a long time.

Genuine question: The Ferrari had great race pace, but do people think that Vettel would have won that race without the safety car?

Probably not. Ferrari would have had to out-fox Mercedes with an undercut and Merc are diligent enough to make that hard to imagine happening.

What I think bodes well for the season is that Rosberg was genuinely quicker than Hamilton in clear air this race. Even if Ferrari can't repeat this performance on slower tracks and in colder conditions, maybe we can still have a fight for the championship.

I suspect Vettel could have won the race without the SC by 2 stopping, but it would have been a lot closer.

I agree, hopefully it is game on for the rest of the season & we have a 3 way battle for the championship - thank goodness for Ferrari

Interesting race and well done Seb and Fiat. Hope this means we'll have a four battle for the championship this year.

I noticed that the stands at the pit stretch and "back" stretch were more empty than I recall ever seeing them. Any attendance figures out there and how they compared to past Malaysian GPs?

That's true. I don't know why they didn't try a run on the hards first to see what kind of time that produced.

Something else I thought was notable about this race was the spread of times throughout the field, at least in the top positions. Raikkonen was well back, 56 seconds or so I think. Yet there was plenty of action through the field.

Whilst I don't think Vettel would've won without the SC, Ferrari did outsmart Mercedes. Given Ferraris inability to make decent strategy calls for a few years, it showed a dramatic improvement. And then when presented with the chance to win, they stepped up. They may not be as fast as Mercedes, but they were still fast. Hopefully this puts to rest any claims that Vettel cannot win in a car that wasn't built by Newey. He looked like a champion on Sunday.

What I thought was interesting was Hamiltons interview after the race. When told by Sky that Vettel was only 3 points behind him, he was shocked. He shouldn't be - theres only 2 races been run, and they've both won a race. The only points difference is that Vettel was third in Australia, whilst Hamilton was second in Malaysia. So the gap should be small. But he looked like he'd become complacent with the Mercedes status. He was shocked that someone could possibly be within striking distance, even at this early point in the season.

Maybe, but that's what Sky felt as well. It was an interesting and stark contrast to Laudas comments from before the race that they were to watch Ferrari.

Either way, it was an interesting race. Interesting to see Hamilton and Rosbergs reactions, interesting to see Ferraris speed, and interesting to see STR out pace the RBR, whilst RBR firmly blame Renault for the problems.

sky are a tabloid sports channel...

look. not being funny, but it's race two in a very long calendar. it's not complacency. that's a surprise to me too, but a few seconds of going "...oh yeah, it's only the second race" and it's completely sensible. it's not hamilton's job to watch ferrari, that's the teams job. his is to drive the car like the clappers. and comparing his reaction to something management said before the race is laughable. sorry.

Watching the BBC's more reasoned coverage at the weekend, I was reminded why I prefer that to Sky's hyperbole.
