This COVID hysteria is ridiculous. I think the ICGT concept is dead now. Thats a wrap on the 2021 season folks :-(

Wonder if a race like the Gulf 12h could gain some entries now because of Kyalami getting dropped.

Honestly the best chance of this event occurring is likely that this variant will have already spread around the world in the next few weeks and going to South Africa will be no different than going anywhere else at that point. I really don't think no matter how many lockdowns we do we are going to stop viruses from spreading it just is what it is.

It might impact travel to/from the US for the Roar/Rolex in a couple of weeks as well.

I thought postponements were over. This really was the worst year to make a motorsport calendar app.

An event postponement is not the same as a government banning flights or mandating quarantines but the effect is the same.

What do you think is fantasy about it? Not being confrontational just legitimately wondering if I've overlooked something or anything. I saw on SC365 that they were planning to air freight cars from Bathurst to Kyalami if needed and that had been my only concern with the races being close together. My bigger concern is whether Bathurst will happen at all so was thinking possibly moving Kyalami to that date is at worst a hedge against Bathurst cancelling due to lockdowns and the new variant.

We seem to be going back into panic mode. Winter was likely to be difficult anyway given the additional pressures. Even before this new variant half of Europe was bringing back restrictions. In that climate an international race in SA in early Feb feels very optimistic. I’m not confident about Bathurst either.

I’m not making a judgement on the reaction to the variant or the decisions of Govts, just looking at the mood music and I’m not feeling good vibes. I hope I am wrong, not least because I have trips to Daytona and Sebring booked.

Bathurst 12 Hours postponed to the 13-15 May.

Not a bad thing, it was a little too close to Kyalami anyway, and this way theres a better chance of a good grid

The problem now is that the event will clash with about one million other races on the same weekend, or the weekend before or after.

GT World Challenge @ Magny Cours
ELMS @ Imola
IMSA @ Mid Ohio
and to a lesser extent: Formula E @ Berlin

Good chance SRO will move the Magny Cours race, although their scope for doing so in a very very cramped part of the calendar is slim. August and September are more free.

I imagine they will cut their loses on ELMS and IMSA clashes, unless this race is before or after the european season there will undoubtedly be clashes.

My guess is that simply less European teams will be able to attend the races, the transport requirements are too long, so it only really allows teams with a spare car that they can ship off for a few months during the busiest part of the season to attend from Europe.

Only 14 cars for Kyalami. I hope things are more normal come the end of the year.

It really needs to happen at a different time of year to avoid the rain but the northern hemisphere calendar probably wouldn't allow it.

It seems weird not having any Porsche presence in the 9 Hours on top of the fact that Porsche owns Kyalami.
