As to Gary's axle, what is the labour price in England for a specialized job like engine building or other mechanical components? It seems impossible to get a fix price before opening the engine, gearbox or axle of course, it depends on what can be found inside. The relationship with the engine builder or specialist seems more than important. Probably its the reason why the good ones are so busy and can't accept new clients. Logical anywhere.

The car is on course Garry,is that a wire wheel axle? So many have been wrecked due to poor previous maintanence, hub nuts not being torqued properly and the threads getting wrecked.Last one I did involved removing both threaded ends, making new sections.Tig welded in,and axle rebiult in around six hours .Just to give you an idea. Yes, terence, old school, good school!
From my understanding it happens that you test development parts only or elements for some car makers. Do you always know on which model they will be fitted? Before each french car maker has his own circuit, Montlhéry was the place they use to test everything. Hence the best place for paparazzi! Once I realized I was following a Citroën Ami 6 at more than 100 mph… They were testing the new 4 cylinder of the next to come GS. |

Yes Gerard, the development is always with the model involved. We are always aware of what has been changed so we can feel what diffence, if any,the change has made.Very interesting and enjoyable.Sometimes very long hours are involved but thats just how it is.Last laps of the day are always the best.
On a totally different note. Why should Louis Hammilton have to appologise for stating "Boys dont wear dress's?Absolutely ridiculous!!!!! Last edited by terence; 27 Dec 2017 at 07:24. |

The storm that has erupted is about boys wearing dresses, per se, but about him publically shaming his nephew on social media which could be deemed a form of public bullying. As for males actually wearing frocks, and some rather fetching floral ones at that, the artist Grayson Perry has made a pretty good living out of the practice. As has Paul O'Grady and many others. |

I put my trust in them that their approach would be cheaper but I think the costs just got away from them and I'll end up paying the penalty. My main issues are lack of clarity on estimates and in communication thereafter. |

Lack of clarity and communication during work seems to be a common theme, whether on classics or modern stuff.
Going back to the story of the day (slow news?), maybe he should think a bit more (or think) before posting stuff on soshul meedya....... |

One wonders if this is the basis of recent notable resale value increases. Rather like a typical 21st century pension fund where any increase possibly just about matches the additonal contributions made over the period, the value of a classic following refurbishment maybe reflects the additional costs refurbishment work (assuming not done by oneself) and storage/insurance overheads over some years. Not in all cases of course, but perhaps in enough to make the attraction of the pure investment logic something that really only applies when there are few if any certain ways to do more with the cash it ties up. |

Remarkably overt radio interview on R4 earlier - Barack Obama with Prince Harry firing the questions:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05s395q#play I'm aware that certain subjects should be avoided on here but nevertheless listening to the informed and intelligent responses from the former president it beggars believe that the american people actually elected the current nincompoop. |

I'll have to sit down and listen to that, it's nice to hear two intelligent people discussing the world. I used to watch Question Time for that, but bringing in the general public always lowers the quality of debate. See also Jeremy Vine, all of Five Live output etc etc

service espaily for those axles. But after investing a couple of thousand in a completely new three sync gearbox, like pre 65 cars are supposed to use.Brand new casings, far superior grade metals for the layshaft, gears and mainshaft(sole reason for the failures).None of the eighteen people who said Yeah, fantastic,Ill have one, would put a £500 deposit down.I decided the axles would probably take the same route,so didnt go any further apart from one I did as a spare.Thats staying where it is though.😁 Costing then, with a 12 mth warranty, even for race use,was £1645 per axle. |

Bit of a dilemma here, people- As weather forecast is bad for this morning I’ve decided to drive 1.5 miles to the rail station rather than walk. Question- how many blankets, sleeping bags, shovels, flasks of hot soup, spare mobile phone batteries should I pack for the journey? I should add that there are a few yards where the roads haven’t been salted.....

Wouldn’t be the first time!
So, Apple are going to offer certain model iPhone users a cut price battery replacement to compensate for the recent furore over them ‘slowing down’ older phones. Are they also going to speed said phones up again, then? |

Now is they provided the phones with a use swappable battery there would be no problem in the first place - battery becomes dodgy, buy new one replace. But of course it might not be an "Apple" battery if the third party market manufacturers in China got their way. For your journey .... find a local outlet with with a sale on festive hampers. Should be enough in one of those to keep you going for a while. How well does regenerative braking work on snow and ice? |
