Sandown 500 off

Procar has moved the 500 from Sandown to Phillip Island, to be held on the same date.

It seems the teams had expressed concern over budget's increasing too much due to the Bathurst 24 Hour.

Shame, as it is good to have a lead-up endurance event prior to an important enduro like the 24 Hour.

I presume AVESCO's 500 will now assume the Sandown 500 name.

Sorry I don't quite understand...they've moved the 500km race at Sandown to a 500km race at Phillip Island ? How is that cheaper ?

Nope wait just had a look at the PROCAR site...race formats have not been decided.

The impression i got from the article is that they will be the usual format's, or at least not an endurance race.

Strange. The Sandown race never attracted a big crowd did it, hopefully PI works out better for them.

Aussie I'm not a TC fan but Procar cancelling the 500 has stuff all to do with the v8's, unless you know something I dont?

Can't see that happening. If they can't attract a crowd in Metro Melb, what is the incentive for people to drive 2 hours down to PI?

Does PI attract a crowd to anything. The bike crowds are big, but not a sell out, and the V8 crowds aren't either. Apparently alot of the drivers preferred PI to Sandown.

This is a huge shame as far as i'm concerned. They had a classic race and they've let it go. One of the reason's i read is that the competitiors didn't want to change the cars from endurance trim, the sprint trim (Indy) then back to endurance trim for the 24 hour. I would have thought the 500 was a more important event to Procar than the Gold Coast.

From the point of view of us race fans the 500km race is more important but the crowds at the Gold Coast Indy would easily be 5 times greater than those at the 500km race offering more exposure for the sponsors.

Definatly, but how much exposure do they get when the races are in the early morning or late afternoon, and only 5-8 laps in length, with delayed TV, compared to 500km and live TV?

I still think they would benefit more from the Indy gig.
