Classic Saloon/Touring car racing

Some of you will know that I'm a big fan of classic saloon racing. I said in another thread that I've just got the Saloon Car Racing - 60s Style video, and I have all the BTCC reviews from 1989. Are there any other videos that anyone could recommend for some good classic action? And is there anywhere on the web that's recommended as a good source of racing videos?

Cheers

The Classic Saloon Car club have a video out showing various classes of racing, but I can't remember what its called. www.csccgb.co.uk should show some info. Try e-mailing them.

Cheers, Hobson, but I was actually one of the first people to pre-order that video at the Classic Car Show at the NEC last year. It features the CSCC's usual selection of wonderful cars, some great action, and even a short interview with our very own Peter Mallett

Because the Bathurst 1000, preceded as it was by the 500, and prior to that the Phillip Island forerunners to this race, have always been televised, there are videos available.

Just to put you in the picture, the beginnings were in 1960, the race was for unmodified cars up until 1972.

Among other things the videos show is the progress of the cars and the circuit... Bathurst with its bumpy surface and wire fences, skinny tyres to wide slicks... very informative.

Hi Maisie, I have a couple of videos at home of early seventies action one is just called 70's saloon car action and follows Noel Edmonds at a few venues in the btcc and then does a feature on Mr. Marshall and his Vauxhall racing through a season including some Big Bertha special saloon races. The other video is the Avon tour of GB 74,75,76 which is quite fun, James Hunt,Roger Clark etc...racing and rallying against each other, can't for the life of me remember the production company - I'll have a look and post tomorrow if I remember if that sort of thing interests you?

you should buy the video of 2001 Silverstone Historic Festival. It has most of the first pre 65 touring car race (including the smash at the start) and brief highlights of the second. You will then have the dubious honour of seeing my car being lapped coming out of Luffield on the last lap by the winning Mustang!
Also this year in addition to Top Hat and HRSR the TOCA races will have 60's touring as suport at 4 meetings but I am still awaiting regs so not sure how it will work as 60's sportscars will be in the same race!

I have an Alfa Guila Sprint GT which is pretty comprehensively thrashed by the super quick Lotus Cortina's and Mustangs. However it was in fact my co driver who was racing at that point. You see me coming in just in front of the other Mustang for the driver change. For some reason I make the cut quite a lot for an also ran! I guess the editor is an Alfa fan!!!
I see that you were interested in the Arbaths, I remember seeing them racing as a child at Silverstone with the engine covers up and funny fronts. Were they competitive?? I dont remember but I dont see any out now (apart from the one that is always being advertised which raced at Goodwood in 98). Maybe in class they were but it is a hollow victory to be leading a class of 1 or 2 and have everyone else scream passed you, I know from sad experience!! I started off in a 1300 Lancia Fulvia coming 2nd in class, last in field!!!!!

Wow! That sounds great!

This is perhaps a bit girly, but I have a soft spot for the smaller cars which don't get the limelight - I happen to think Glenn Canning's NSU TTS (CSCC) is one of the best things since sliced bread - looks great AND won the championship overall I also love the A35s and Moggy Minors in the CSCC, and of course I have a thing about ickle Fiat 500s, especially seeing the tremendous way they were being hurled round corners in that video! Great stuff - I wonder if anyone still has one...

Post a message next time you're on track, and we'll come along to cheer you on and poke your car

all support is always welcome!!!!
sadly it wont be until either Easter weekend TOCA meeting at Brands (depending on regs as I dont fancy competeing against ICS door banging hotrods!!) otherwise Silverstone HSCC opening meeting (which is always a great meeting on 27/28th April. Then upto Donington the next weekend for Top Hat endurance and new Alfa Bertone Series GTA Challenge also organised by Julius Thurgood. It all seems a long way off!!!

Glenn Canning's NSU is great! I remember him writing into Practical Classics asking for info about the NSU, and him stating that his main rivals would be Imps, Minors etc.

BTW Masie, did you know that a comapny makes an R/C body of the NSU for the Tamiya Mini? I can get pics if you want.

The production company responsible for releasing the 70s saloon car videos Slowcoach mentioned is PP Video. They have also released several of the BRSCC's annual season reviews. While these contain much that is single-seater oriented, there is some cracking saloon and GT action also to be had.

Look for "Motor Racing 50s Style" and "Motor Racing 60s Style" and be prepared for some very "period" commentary and camera work, but they are really delightful tapes.

The Bathurst tapes Ray mentions have also been released in the UK. Sports Seen packaged them in the late 1980s, and more recently I believe Duke have had a licence to market them. The important tapes for this thread are Philip Island/Bathurst 1960-1966 and Bathurst 1967-1974.

Thanks again everyone

Hobson, I'd love some info on getting an NSU shell - I quite like the idea of doing a Glenn Canning replica paint job

Tim, I'll look out for those vids. I found a good site last night selling videos, and I'll post the link when I get home later.

The picture quality isn't the best ( ), but you can tell that it's an NSU. I'm sure your local model shop can get one, as it is made by Carson, and part of Tamiya INC.

I recall / have some wherea video of the history of the Mk1 escort it has some short scenes of saloon car racing that might fit the bill. Also the history of the lotus / cortina has some great clips of jim clark sideways. I have seen these videos at Burtons.

TimD is correct, of course, the videos I mentioned were PP Video-the label dated them at 1993 the ref numbers are ppv 3127 and ppv 3128 they are based in Herts and their phone number is 01885-488800 think I might give them a call myself later and see what else they have

If anyone is interested I have the first six events of the 1997 season (Donington, Silverstone, Thruxton x2, Brands & Oulton) on video, recorded from Sky Sports. If anyone wants to borrow it - please get in touch!

I recently ordered some movies from

www.choicesdirect.co.uk

they haven't arrived yet, so I don't know what the service is like but they certainly have a big selection.

Is this a record for gaps between posts? I was getting all excited reading Simon's post about 60's touring cars supporting BTCC this year until I noticed the date, doh!
