Ran very briefly with the Truck Series in early nineties.

I have photo from a race at Sandown somewhere but I can't find it at the moment. I believe it was from the Truck Racing Meeting at Sandown that was sponsored by Woolworths!

From memory there was at least one B Series Mazda and a couple of Rodeo's.

Yes i remember this series, ran in 1993 from memory

Nissan even had a "works" team in the series, with lead driver Warwick Rooklyn.

The great old Wide World of Sports TV show even did a feature story on the category, which included Charles Stewart competing in one of the rounds at Oran Park in Rooklyn's spare Nissan

In these photos I'm fairly sure they weren't set to ride height

Maiden SuperUtes track test close

Engine will have a fair bit more grunt than the base model

Quote:
he base weight has been listed as 1,800kg, which may be brought down for any engines unable to make the approximate 340bhp and 500 ft lbs targets.

I may have the race program from the '93 Sandown meeting. The fields were quite small from memory.

The ute seems to be set down on the cornering weighting scales in the pic. With the aggressive offset and huge tyre diameter they have chosen (which I don't agree with), I don't see how they could lower it any further without the tyres rubbing.

I gotta say, theyre visually unimpressive, they look more like the type of ute a driver would stand in the back of on a drivers parade lap. And they aren't going to sound great either, lets be honest. Here's hoping the racing is good. It will need to be.

Flogging a dead horse, let the Ute Series die with dignity and concentrate on support categories that are already drawing the numbers

Now that there are a few utes built competitor interest is really picking up. I know of a few ex ute racers that are very interested in the new series and also some bigger name teams that are very interested in maybe running utes...............budgets permitting of course

Prodrive was mentioned at wanting some involvement in the series.
Presumably a link to RSR would make the most sense for them.
If RSR runs one of their 3 units with a works pilot aboard (say a prodrive enduro partner without a regular gig) it would be very competitive

Having met with Ross Stone and Supercars, John Casey, at Townsville last weekend, it's fair to say that there is a "lot of water to go under the bridge yet" meaning that there a number of issues to be resolved in the next 3 months, including the engine testing, track testing, body kits etc.

What will be on show at Bathhurst will look a lot different to what was seen at Townsville thats for sure. In some way it was a shame that they showed the Triton with its wheels and tyre's sticking way outside the body work, but I guess there was so much pressure on Supercar's to have the vehicles there they could not afford to be a "no show".

I for one an certain that this series will get off the ground both in Australia and in New Zealand.

Do you think the Ssang Yong would be a good fit for the series, in terms of specs?

SsangYong website is light on for info, im thinking not.

New Great Wall out (Steed), however only a 2.4l diesel, which would leave it a bit short on power (and only a 5 speed)

Navara is also a 2.4l but has a twin turbo model, (not sure if that becomes a parity problem)

Great Lake Motor Distributor's import both Ssangyong and LDV vehicle's into New Zealand, and we are looking at running the brand new LDV Ute in the Australian Series in Partnership with the Australian distributor, as the all new Ssangyong ute will not debut until early next year.

However, depending on the interest of Ssangyong Korea it may also be possible to homologate the new Actyon Sport ute sometime next year, as the NZ Ssangyong Actyon Sports Series finish's on the 27th March next year, after its fourth and final season.
