Best Aussie Racing Series?

Ok, peoples, time to nominate your five favourite Australian Racing Categories, whether it be touring cars, or open wheelers. Oh, and just for fun, include your three least favourite categories. Please include a reason for each

My list goes like this:

Five Favourite Categories
1. V8 Supercars - The only possible answer
2. Formula Ford - Great Racing, great fun
3. GTP/Nations Cup - Great variety of cars
4. Formula Holden - OK, the grids are down, but I still like them.
5. Sports Sedans - Brilliant

Three Least Favourite Categories
1. Drag Cars - Hundreds of dollars for a few seconds in a straight line
2. Super Trucks - Lots of people love them. I reckon they're terrible
3. Super Tourers - They'd be Ok if more people watched them

Blimey! I don't think I will do too well here...

To be honest, i love just about every class. V8s to Geminis....

Probably what I don't like seeing is regularity trials at proper race meetings, as well as an class that fronts up with 5 cars, and those 5 cars plod around....

Methinks you just don't get it.
Drag racing has all the same things that 'drive' individuals in circuit racing, Commitment, Comraderie, Engineering, Presentation, Theatre, and above all "the Thrill of the Chase!" Competition!

There's nothing like a good nite at the drags. Always entertaining, and trust me I have seen some DULL touring car meets over the years.

So preferences in broader categories :
1.F1,
2.Top Class Drags,
3.World Champ Bikes 500's/SBK
4.Spintcar/ Solo m/c speedway,
5.Aussie Tourers

RustyGT, that is just my personnal opinion. Some people just love drag cars. I honestly don't think much of them. Sure, it takes some skill, and there is a lot involved, but I, personnaly, and not a big fan.

Put this way, I love Le Mans cars. Maybe you think they're stupid. It's just a matter of opinion.

My Favourites:
1. Historic Touring Cars (Of course)
2. Improved Production Touring Cars (Huge variety, keen racing, cars you can relate to)
3. Super Tourers (Variety of makes, spectators well catered to, greeat sounds)
4. V8 Supercars (Huge fields, awesome cars, all the names)
5. GT Performance (Big variety, great racing)

I don't want to list my least favourites, because we have to ban together here and fight the common enemy, football, cricket, golf etc.
but I must admit to being a little unenthused by Formula Ford and Vees and Sports Cars and HQs.

Had a similar opinion to yourself about football.
He figured:
'That if there were 26[30,36] men on the park, all chasing the same football'...

Would not it be easier to:
'Give them one each, and be done with it now!' Agreed!

This really is too difficult.

I like bikes, and the domestic variety especially, but I don't get to see the races. When I do the good guys then go OS.

Recently on the worlds stage I'd say the Superbikes then the GP classes.

Domestic car racing, I would take anything on offer. But to get an idea where my head is at. I enjoy the variety of Speedweek more than than the V8 Supercar race on a Sunday afternoon. Although I religiously watch both. The racing is often more exciting in the Lanos category though.

I like this topic, fairly easy for me to go through as well. As I often think about it.

1. Improved Production Racing Association. (love the closeness, the ingenuity and the fact that it is drivers and tyres that spearate the teams)
2. Formula 3 (If there was any form of racing I would next like to step into, it would have to be F3. They look and sound absolutely magic)
3. Nations Cup (I would love to race in this class. Plus a friend of ours, Paul Stokell is doing very well in the championship.)
4. Konica V8 Series (They are close, fast and furious)
5. Historic Touring Cars (I would love one of John Mann's Mustangs, people say I am crazy but there is just something about a mustang)

Three disliked classes,
1. GTP Groups D and E (they are so boring to watch. I nearly fall asleep everytime they go out)
2. Formula Vees (they are just souped up little go-karts that are hard to separate as they move around the track)
3. Drag Racing (sorry to say but it bores me)

saw the improved production's at round 8 of the super tourer's at oran park, them and the Historic Tourer's provided some of the best racing of the weekend, Graeme Watts was pretty fast in his Mazda.

Do they call Appendix J now Historic Tourers, i thought they changed it to Group N.

The CAMS Manual gives its regulations for the class in Group N. The cars that inspired the class were from Appendix J of the same Manual of 1962 and thereabouts. And they are Historic Touring Cars by definition.

So you can take your pick!

Australain Touring Cars ran to Appendix J rules from 1960 to 1964. In 1981 it was decided to recreate the fun and excitement of the old cars and a new class was created, using virtually the same rules as Appendix J. The new class was called Group N. At the start of this year CAMS ratified a partial name change, so for all promotional and marketing/publicity purposes, they are called Historic Touring Cars, though the official documentation refers to Groups Na, Nb, and Nc.

I would have to say that i prefer club race meetings to national meetings. More of a social occasion at the club meetings and usually better racing.

My favorite five would be
1. Improved production. Excellent variety and close racing.
2. sports sedans. Just awsome to watch(especially in the rain)
3. Group N. GT Falcons and Mustangs, and the odd dato 1600
4. GTP.
5. V8 supercars

My least favorite would be
1. Formula vee(formula lunchtime). They used to be good 15years ago with Bernie Henle and the like at amaroo.
2. Formula holden, not enough depth in the field.
3. Drag racing (anything that doesnt go around corners isnt a race)

Formula Vees still offer great racing. I think it was about two years ago at QR when they had a round of the Super Series there and some of them were racing four wide down the back straight and passing at every corner. Also, just last weekend at Lakeside, the Vee racing was great. One of them went through the kink in a tight bunch with the rear end on the grass.

Nation's Cup - basically GT racing
Sports Sedans - great engine variety and car shapes/configuration
Super Tourer's - I love any International Touring Car class
F3 - close international standard racing
Trucks - Big action, getting more competitive trucks so getting better
Historic Tourers - Real Touring Car Racing
Group C / Group A races - Loved the car's on my bathurst highlight video's, wish they were on TV cos' i wanna see them again, sounds great

Least Favourites:

V8 Supercar - Basically stuffing Oz motorsport, taking all the money away and taking races away from proper race tracks to road tracks, what's the point of build ing permanent circuits if AVESCO treats them like this

Drags - For people who can't brake or turn left and right
Daewoo's - sound like mosquito's, bring back TR7 series

My Favourites would be as follows.

1) V8 Supercars - got me into motorsport
2) Nations Cup and the Procar circus - Just about everything is there
3) Commodore Cup - Great racing from these old cars
4) Supertrucks - if you doubt how good they are go see them live !
5) Super Touring - I really enjoyed the 1999 season when Audi and Volvo were still in it. 2000 was a bit of a dud...let's wait and see what their new rules can produce

I like World Rally but can't stand the Aussie series...just bores me.

Super tourers, up until last year, allways had good close racing even 2000 had it's moments with a depleted field.

As for my favorite class, I would have to say Nations Cup. Seeing cars such as the Porsche GT3, Ferrari F360 and the Lamborghini Diablo of Tassie by Paul Stokell is one of the great sights. Although unfortunately I rarely get to see any of it, as our local stations in Tassie choose not to show these programs.

difficult topic..i like all the classes..from formula Vee through to V8's..the only thing i dont like is drag racing as many have stated above..I just dont see the point in spending all that money to drive the thing for 10 seconds and then rebuild it..what a waste of time and money..but hey it takes all kinds to make the world go round and good luck to people who are into it but its just not for me.

anyway I love openwheelers but sadly the level in Oz is down ..except for formula ford ..sure the numbers maybe swindling but the level of talent this year is amazing..the front runners have all been superstars in karting and are doing very well in formula ford .

anyway here goes not in any particular oder.

When I say that, I am referring to the lack of manufacturer involvement in the super tourers. If more people watched them, chances are we'd have more factory teams, like in 1996.

I only really follow the V8s these days, but watch the supports at the Sydney races, (the only ones I can get to) but loved watching the old cars at EC..I think Group N.

D.R.T it stands for Daniel's Racing Team. I am looking into starting up a racing team in the Super Touring Championship before the great series finishes. I'm Daniel, the founder of this organisation, however it isn't particulary large at the moment just a dream. I'm building a site, when its done check it out. I tell you then. If you are interested in talking about the team , just send me an e-mail and we can talk it up. Nice idea this forum.
