Garry Willmington at Wakefield might be one to talk to about Jags - I know he still has his - he may be able to fill you in on other Jags around.

I noticed in AMC that they are trying to track down John Goss' Group C Jaguar XJS touring car. I was under the impression it had been coverted to Group A spec., and was the car used by Goss and Muir (Citibank colours) at Bathurst in 1986.

I understood that the Group A Jag John Goss used at Bathurst in 1986 was a TWR shell, including a TWR build number... that car ended up back in the UK and onsold to a customer believing it was part of the regular TWR fleet...
The 1985 3rd placed Group A car of Percy/Walkinshaw was sold recently by the administrators of TWR for STG90,000. |

Goss Jag ex-Group C car
I remember the Citibank Goss Jaguar being portrayed as being his Group C car converted to Group A. It is also reported as such on page 77 of the “James Hardie 100 1986/7” annual.

The Great Race book went to some lengths to explain the radiator cowling and numerous other bits and pieces of the Goss 1986 car were 'Group C' spec and had him in trouble with the scrutineers, however what wasnt clear was that some parts and equipment were said to have flowed from TWR Europe to help Gossy along in his private entry... which apparently included a Group A shell.
At what stage the shell was at, and how many bits had to be ratted from the Group C car to make it run is something only Mr Goss can probably answer now You can buy a 1:24 model of the Group A car at http://www.auswidemodels.com.au/dc%201_24%20pg2.htm |

There were quite a few Jag XJS's around. Bob How or Howe from vic had one back in the early 80s that he club raced in Touring Car trim, then we had Gossy's, Willmingtons Grp A Version then later John Clinton's version. Reda Awadallah had one in about 88/89 which raced as a Sports Sedan, that Willmington raced a few times, not sure if this was the Willmington car modified. There was later Paul Warne's version which raced in the invitational sports car races in NSW in the late 90s, although im not sure of the history of that car.

GTR,I have the other Bathurst book that was in competition to Tuckey/Berghouse/Floyds book by Barry Naismith/ David Hassall(I think). I will have a look in regards to this as I always thought it was the original jag from 1980. Gossy had a reputation for last minute car preparation and the 86 version was no different. Gossy version of the accident with Ravalgia to Pat Welsh in the pitline was classic Gossy speak!

It has taken a little time but here it is:
Extract from the Bathurst 86/87 by Barry Naismith: Jaguar Rover Australia's decision not to financially support Tom Walkinshaw Racing title defence, due to the dire state of the Australian car market, left the British bred 1985 cars parked at the Burley Scots English Base. But Goss, loyal to the marque after being wooed by other teams happened to have two new, part prepared Jags of his own which he had considered running earlier in the season on the momentum of Bathurst 1985, befor hitching up again with TWR. The defender's No10 car was built at Goss's usually dormant Sydney race workshop, where the preparation was directed by brothers Peter, Michael and longtime Goss mechanic Grant O'Neil. The Goss team were on their own for 1986, so they had to modify parts locally,as well as cope with the tuning of the engine electronics. They used the experience gained from years on the Group C project, reused many parts from the 1984 TWR Goss co-operative project car and mixed in a bit of TWR information. Construction of the car began late and it only just made it to Bathurst, teething problems & all.A rebuild some trye testing and a screwing up of the power output from the 5.3 litre V12 to as high as 500hp, was all that was needed to get the 1400 kg cat moving quicker than the previous year. |

Have read the Goss story in AMC on his (Citibank) Group A Jaguar XJS.
Something doesn't stack up. I've heard that the Group C survived to run in club racing (stories in Australian Jaguar Mag), but we don't know for a fact (though it was claimed to be ex Goss Group C) whose it was, though I believe Wilmington still has his. I've also heard about the Citibank Group A Jag was a Walkinshaw shell that returned to the UK became a green machine and sold off by Tom to some unsuspecting punter. But if Gossy still has this car (how recent is the photo) then this story is not true - another urban myth. If Goss maintained both the Group C and Group A logbooks then he can do anything with the "Citibank Jag." Its not as if this sort of thing hasn't happened before. I recall a mate, who has a very good Group C knowledge (he raced them in period) telling me that at an historic meeting at Queensland Raceway "the only thing authentic thing about the Group C paddock was the sight of Bob Holden trying to get his Escort to run on four cylinders!" I suspect that the AMC mailbag will have a few letters on the Goss Jag, and we might get closer to the truth... |

Don't know about Clinton's car.
However, Australian Muscle Car had a story a few years ago on the Goss Jag. There was only ever one car, which started as a Group C car in 1980 and was then converted by Goss to Group A specs in 1986. It sat in Group A Citibank colours for years until restored by Goss and painted up (inexplicably) in replica 1985 TWR Jaguar colours. Perosnally, I think the car in Group C specs would be stunning. |
