BMW won't build another M1 because BMW is a business. Winning races is okay, but the same money spent on TV ads gets more return.

It could sell the Z4---to doctors who wanted something a little more refined than a Corvette?---but sees no benefit from trying to poach Ferrari territory. Or, at a lower range, Audi R8/Lambo Huracan/Vette/AMG territory. There just isn't a lot of real estate left out there. BMW makes bucks on "sports sedans," a little more supposedly "sporty" than Mercedes, and has a decent following there. Any other niche, it would have to invest big in order to break in, probably.

As I understand it, AMG and Audi went into GT3 as much to have an engineering base for a customer program as to actually race. Business.

I suspect BMW think they have: the i8.

And as you say, it seems likely that the replacement for the Audi R8 will also be electric.

It's not a co-incidence that that three manufacturers committed long-term to the WEC are the three for whom sportscars are their actual business. While the more mainstream makers are happy to make money (and get free marketing) sellling GT3s to rich people to race, there is no reason whatsoever for them to invest in a GTE. No business case, no marketing case, no technology case, nothing.

Possible 992 generation Porsche 911 GT3 RSR GTE/GTLM car spotted testing at Monza and is expected to debut in public at the WEC Prologue in July.

Some highlights: Front diffuser's leading splitter design seems similar to the Aston Martin Vantage.

Larger air intakes on the side of the rear fenders.

Rear diffuser more integrated into the car.

New side skirts.

Engine exhaust appears to exit ahead of the rear wheels.

It's unknown (since I haven't found video of the car testing yet) if the new 911 RSR is turbocharged or NA. But you do have to remember that the 992 911 RSR is probably built around the same tech waiver that the 991 Mk II 911 RSR is. Making that car and probably the 992 RSR effectively mid engine.

The probable reason for the side exit exhaust is probably the same as the front mid engine Aston Martin Vantage. Shorter pipes means less back pressure, which means potentially more power.

Sounds naturally aspirated but also sounds less interesting than the current one. And quieter.

Handy having both versions on track at the same time.

The WEC has to be on life support financially with the pullout/advertising monies from Ford & BMW. GT3 adoption has to be close considering Aston Martin & Ferrari already run their GT3 chassis in GTE.

According to Marshall Pruett, Ford has said, "No" to DPi 2.0. Ford want's a Serious hybrid class, like FIA hybrids or such, which would justify a lot of spending ("It's not racing, it's R&D,") for Ford but would alienate all the other manufacturers who don't want FIA-style budgets.
(https://racer.com/2019/05/28/pruett-...hCma3G-9LzAPjM) I don't see IMSA going the way of FIA--after all, WEC's hybrid class essentially killed itself--and Ford has said that that is all that will entice it into the series.

I say, Good riddance. IMSA needs to keep costs down and keep making money, and needs to keep the cost of participating and succeeding low enough to attract fresh blood. WEC can't even find two teams to race in the top class---why would anyone follow that example?

Exactly, if Ford want more hybrid power, why don't they build a LMP1? The argument looks like an excuse to leave.

They want to compete in the US since that's their biggest market.

No it didn't. None of the hybrid manufacturers have left because of costs or hybrids themselves. Audi left because of the dieselgate, Porsche due to achieving everything already, Nissan because of embarrassment and horrible unfixable car.

As for "not being able to find two teams", it's bit of a joke considering that say Rebellion and SMP are just about as high caliber teams as the very top in "DPi". But even taking your bait argument, how could there be more than one factory when it was announced ages ago that the current P1 would be axed off for 2021... no-ones going to commit for a current set of regs about to be killed off and switched to some vague TBA bop nonsense. So they just wait... and lobby... out of desperation

I'd say that cost vs ROI was a big motivation for Audi and Porsche to leave the WEC. Dieselgate was just a public justification for doing so if one Porsche official is to be believed, as in the one who anon. admitted that the WEC had no ROI for Porsche Motorsport beyond Le Mans.

I think costs maybe got a little too high. Obviously manufacturers will have their own reason for leaving, but really if you keep costs down, there is one less reason for them to leave

Pretty sure that whatever happens, WEC won't throttle back the P1-H to P1-L levels ... which means the P1-Ls will always be fighting for second place.

And sure ... no manufacturer was about to replace Porsche and Audi with a big change scheduled for 2020 .... but also no manufacturers were planning to join at any time before that. Basically it was Toyota against VAG all along, just VAG ran two teams or a while ... and once Porsche won Le Mans, there was no further point to competing.

Audi made it clear that they had money enough for Formula-E .... so while Dieselgate did hurt VAG, it was nothing existential .... I don't see the IMSA or WEC GTLM/GTE getting the axe.

And while no new manufacturers were going to join in 2019, knowing a new formula was supposed to be coming ... FIA hasn't managed to lock down anyone to that new formula either. if I were looking for a management model to adopt for a new company, I'd ask the FIA to write a training manual and Never do anything they suggested.

As a whole though, GTE Pro has kept me interested in WEC since 2017 really. Also the Porsche LMP1 in 2017 was awesome too. They are gone now. With BMW and Ford leaving, I am not just feeling it for WEC in 19-20. LMP1 is the same, don't care about LMP2, GTE Pro down to 6 cars. 2 of which we can see in SRO racing (Ferrari, Aston), the other in IMSA (Porsche). GTE Am will be the same makes.

Not too excited about the series after Le Mans. Might be IMSA and GT3 racing for me as a fan in the 2nd half of 2019.

Got my fingers crossed that for IMSA GTLM in 2020 we can get Ford GT's back in some capacity or maybe an all pro GT3 effort getting to run in that category with special dispensation. Don't want to see GTLM go below 8 cars either.
