As the ex-owner of a Triumph Toledo, I can confirm that they're actually not all that rust-prone. Certainly better than a lot of cars of their era. But I've never seen a racing one before - discounting the one James Hunt entered once for a charity demolition derby. Poor little thing didn't last very long in that environment.

Good to see this one looking so smart.

Looks like the Historic racing scene is alive and well in NZ or are sone of these dated. Anywho, thanks for the great images

BTW what is a Toledo? Looks like a Dolomite of which we have several still racing over here......

Tollys are very similar to Dolomites, but are smaller - shorter-wheelbase, and had smaller boots and a two-door option. They carried 1300cc engines, whereas the Dolomite Sprints which raced so successfully are 1850cc, and the front-end styling was different (2 square headlamps as opposed to the Dolly's 4 round ones). The very last Toledos were actually badged Dolomite 1300s, I believe.

Hi,

If memory serves correct the racing Sprints had a 2 litre engine. Dolomites on the road had 1300, 1500, 1850 or the 16valve 2 litre of the Sprint.

I had a 1500 many years ago and it was a great car. (Shared it's twin carb engine with the last Spitfires and Midgets.)

We're forgetting the front wheel drive 1300TC... which shared the RWD Toledo's body shell, if I remember right.

I'm trying very hard to forget the 1300TC - I had one, and when the clutch went, it was an economic write-off!

Chris, the car looks like it is a credit to you, Minilites/Superlites/whatever must look very smick on the triumph...are you still running the car??

If there are any Marshals reading this, is there anything locking that tyre barrier together behind the car?? How are they normally constructed in the UK? Over here they are usually chained together through holes drilled in the sidewalls of the tyres or protected from seperating by a large barrier of rubber...

Well, I can't post a picture of my old Dolomite as it was never raced, but here is on that did. Photographed by me at a Sprint owners club gathering in 1988.

And here's a rally car spotted at the 1987 gathering. The signs to the field all said "S.O.D.I.T." but I can't remember what on earth the "IT" stood for! Sprint Owners Day.... something. I guess it was just funny?

Yes I am GTB, however I have scaled down my involvement in the last couple of seasons due to other commitments. I'll be out for a few rounds in it this year though. On the subject of tyre walls, they are held together using reinforced nylon strapping. The stuff often used to hold together palletts of buiding materials.

Interesting shots Screech. These Unipart sponsored F3 cars (March?) were piloted by Nigel Mansell and Bernard Devaney. Probably 76 or 77 season if I remember correctly. F3 Sprint bits are very rare but quite sort after. Unfortunately they proved to be unreliable and the 2 litre Toyota lump continued to dominate.

There you go, I knew someone would know. I'm not sure about Devaney now, but found Ken Eady (UK) listed as a driver in 78 also.

Chris - your first image above, the one the right side up, I think is the exit of the chicane an Thruxton. Quick laps always involved the use of the cross road tarmac seen on the right of the F3. I think ...

Could well be QFM. It was the distant fields that made me think it was Riches. Fairly similar vista I guess.

Come to think of it, You'd have to be either a very brave or very stupid photographer to take a shot from there at Snett!!
