Round 3: Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, April.14 - 16

Round 3: Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, April.14 - 16

This weekend will be the 48th running of the Grand Prix of Long Beach and 14th running as an IndyCar event.

The Grand Prix of Long Beach is the oldest running street race in North America and was founded by local travel agent Chris Pook in 1975. The inaugural race was the 7th round of the SCCA Formula 5000 series, held on September 28th 1975 and was won by British driver Brian Redman, in a Lola T332-Chevrolet V8.

Following the success of the F5000 event and only 6 months later, Pook convinced FISA to hold the F1 United States Grand Prix West, which was was won by Swiss F1 veteran Clay Regazzoni, driving a Ferrari-312T. The United States Grand Prix West, as it became known, remained on the F1 calendar until 1983.

After the 1983 Grand Prix, increasing F1 costs, sanctions and shipping charges, made the race too expensive to be run as a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The venue was approached by CART to host a race, with Long Beach becoming a CART/Champ Car perennial event from 1984 to 2008.

Despite series reunification taking place in late February 2008, it emerged that there was a calendar clash between the Champ Car The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and the IndyCar Series round, the Indy Japan 300 at Motegi. With both races so early on in the season and more or less finalised, neither track could change their date; particularly Long Beach, due to the preparations required for a street course. It was decided both races would go ahead, with points from Long Beach counting towards the IndyCar Series championship. The final Champ Car race was held on April 20, 2008 as part of the 2008 IndyCar Series split weekend and was won by Will Power driving for KV Racing, in a Panoz DP01-Cosworth.

The following year the race became part of the IndyCar Series calendar and as with CART/Champ Car it has become a perennial event, except for 2020, when the race was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic. The race returned in 2021 but instead of canceling it for the second year in a row, as the pandemic was still affecting the 2021 season, it was decided Long Beach would host the season finale. In 2022 the race returned to it's usual place in the early part of the calendar.

In 2018, Toyota who had been the naming rights race sponsor of The Grand Prix of Long Beach, a partnership that had continued unbroken since 1980, ended it's long term title sponsorship and partnership with The Grand Prix of Long Beach, with the naming rights going to Acura.

At the beginning of January last year, Long Beach City Council announced an extension to the race through to and including 2028.

Juncos crying that a curb was repaired and Illot didn't know it was there. Ahh, so you admit no one actually knows the track and you just assume, GREAT planning there. Claiming it is not your fault cause you didn't know the curb would be part of the track yes it was damaged previously and just blanketly assume it wouldn't be repaired is just foolish

Round 2 of qualifying was red flagged with 53 seconds left, which resumed with a shoot out. Grosjean topped Round 2 but it seems he clipped wall by the hairpin. O'Ward, Ericsson, Dixon, Palou and Kirkwood make up the rest of the Fast 6.

The curb was evidently not there for the 1st Indycar practice session after having been damaged in the IMSA session earlier on Friday. There was no notice given that it had been replaced for Indycar practice 2. Ilott and VeeKay were both launched into the air after striking the curb which wasn't there in practice 1.

According to Racer.com, ''The curb was put back in place overnight, but according to IndyCar the repair was not communicated to the teams or series prior to Saturday’s session, meaning that most teams were alerted to its existence by seeing Ilott and then ECR’s Rinus VeeKay hit it and crash.''

Canapino really struggled in qualifying. At least he just scratched the wall rather than hit it.

Qualifying Result

Congrats to Kyle Kirkwood on his first IndyCar Pole.

A very strong showing from Honda, filling the top 5 places of the Fast 6 but can they turn this into a win, as it was Josef Newgarden, who qualified 8th on the grid for tomorrow's race, that won at Long Beach last year in his Penske Chevrolet?

A bit of a scrappy start but clean and green until Castroneves binned it at Turn 5. First FCY.

FCY. Dixon into the tyre barrier as O'Ward and Dixon claim the same piece of track. He managed to extricate himself, so back in the race.

O'Ward spins it and goes back dowm the field. Looks like he got tagged by Kirkwood. Great restart for Newgarden.

I get the feeling O'Ward is a bit desperate to get this first win under his belt, he's making mistakes. He tangled with Dixon earlier.

Canapino and Helio need to be parked, neither can figure out how to drive today. Although most of the field seems to not get it either today

Ok, Helio struck and caused the Canapino problems and he did park. Quality of NBC showing zero of that but camera shots that stop before the corner and replays of nothing. So far bad even for NBC coverage

That was a really, really enjoyable race (speaking as a neutral with no specific allegiance).

Great to see Kirkwood boss the race from green to chequer. Also great to see his team mates keep him honest but not too hard, and super great to see Bryan H pull the win for his new boy.

I fully expect Barber to be practically back to front in terms of competitive order, especially if it's wet!

Been getting back into this at Texas and this was a really fun follow up race. Kirkpatrick did very well to keep the two F1 guys behind him.

I agree it looked like O'Ward was trying too hard to impress. I was surprised he didn't get a penalty but I guess I'm used to all tags being litigated by officials globally these days. I don't mind the leniency if it keeps IndyCar the most wheel to wheel high level single seater series going.

Nice drive from Armstrong too.
