Agreed they do look daft, and it requires a lot of work to get the car to a point where it works properly. Problem is, at at what point do you go and allow the grippier tyre? When people started running on slicks? 70’s? 80’s? For me it should be as per period but what do i know. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Just an update, I emailed the organisers and they did give the (fair if it effects the majority of the field) reasoning of trying to balance the field, newer v older cars. It is an extra expense buying 8 tyres for a one off but those are the rules and as I’ve said, I’ve no issue with that. I am led to believe it was the same last year. Im not quite sure i get the reasoning, surely 70’s cars are faster than 50s or 60s ones and thats just it. I dont enter a modern race and expect everyone to be slowed down for me. Suddenly makes the race a lot more expensive for us though....

period tyres for period cars, I don't think anyone has a problem with that . . . . its speed differential that causes accidents with people not paying enough attention. Where that line ios drawn will vary wildly from car to car, person to person and series to series.

I totally get the point about using similar tyres to a car’s period fitment, but when said cars are racing against other cars of a similar period only. |

[QUOTE=Mike Bell;3880900]. The Spa 1hr race (that used to be called ‘Barry’s Race’) had / has a big mix of car ages, but still doesn’t allow slicks.
Spa Ardennes Challenge is the same, big mixed bag of cars - tyres free, but no slicks. I have just received the regs for 2019 Spa Ardennes Challenge races, similar format to previous years, 30 mins qualifying and 2 x 40 mins races. Compulsory pit stop of 1 minute standstill, driver change and refuelling option. Penalty of 2 laps for failing to observe the pit stop. Entry fee €750. As usual, Crosslé Racing Drivers' Club will be there. |

Mike, sorry to hear the Morgans will not be there, they added a lot of class and on track competition to the Challenge.
Hope to see you in something else. |

I wondered if you’d looked at that race! If you haven’t found it, there is a seperate website.... http://spaardenneschallenge.com
If you’re not set on an enduro with (possible) fuel stop, it’s worth considering. And no change of tyres needed! |

Thanks for the info everyone....i dont know how that had passed me by Mike, it might actually suit me better, cheaper all round and i can just drive on my own....never like sharing the car! Had a quick look at the times and based on my own times around there a few yrs ago I wouldn’t be last either :-)

Can I also suggest drivers consider Youngtimer Touring Car Challenge, who are also on the bill for the Spa Classic. Huge grids, a massive range of cars, from 2 stroke Trabants to Zakspeed Capri and plenty in between. If its got 4 wheels and it moves under its own power, your in, HTP papers not required, its all about the pleasure of racing older cars..... https://www.ytcc.nl/mayvinci-ytcc-20...er-and-prices/

Looks good this meet.More of a clubbie feel to which is good.Looking at past years footage the event seems to get quite a range of cars and certainly large (derrr its Spa).Anyway hope to go as haven't been to Spa yet (that will change SOON).

No HTPs needed for the Ardennes Challenge, it's virtually all-comers. I'm taking the Lenham...

Is it mandatory to race three times in UK with this club to be accepted? Any idea of a good lap time for an appendix Grp1 Escort/A048? Based on a 911 with Dunlop's I'd say circa 3'08/ 3'05. Mike does it sound good? Foreigners accepted? We still dont know what is Podd's car…

Thank you so much, Mike. Bear in mind that asking to "some" foreigners to think about anything is not a piece of cake tho!

Gerard, my car is a 1972 Fiat 128sl, built to (roughly) Trophee Ardennes spec. So somewhere between Grp1 and Grp 2. Our last time there we were doing 3:18’s on AO48’s but expect to go faster as we have a more powerful engine now. Put it this way, we wont be troubling the front end of the field :-) I would think the escort would be around 3:05 or so. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
