White Morris Special
(Sometimes referred to as the Skinner Special)
When the “Hundred Pound” side-valve Morris Minor was introduced, a special supercharged single-seater version was produced as a publicity stunt, which achieved 100mph in supercharged form, and 100 miles per gallon (unsupercharged). The car was driven by Bill van der Becke, who worked for the S.U. Carburettor Company Ltd. Subsequently, Carl Skinner, Managing Director of S.U., rebuilt the car with a light two-seater body for his son Peter to drive, and it created a sensation by winning the 850cc class at Shelsley against the M.G. and Austin Seven teams. A similar car was built for Peter’s sister Barbara who also set new records at Shelsley. Both cars were fitted with superchargers blowing at 24psi, but when all the special cylinder blocks had been used up, Peter’s car was fitted with a straight eight Hudson engine of 4168cc fitted with four S.U. carburettors, which succeeded in winning the 5000cc class at Shelsley in September 1937 and at both events in 1937. Barbara’s car known as the “White Morris” is now being restored to its original condition by David Baldock and we would very much appreciate any information or photos that may exist. It is hoped that the restored car will be seen for the first time since 1937 at Shelsley and Prescott this year. Contact john_potts@btinternet.com |

John P welcome to the forum. I hope you find other things of interest to discuss but I also trust our venerable posters (I'm not one of them) will be able to assist.

I have just this morning spoken to David about the problem of locating a suitable engine and we have identified the original Morris Marine Vedette engine as being a likely candidate. The first Vedette was in production from 1933 to 1936 before the later MM series block was configured for marine use. This later series of Vedette in various marks was produced until 1957.
The Register has in it's collection one only early Vedette which we have offered to David to use for patterns or ideas plus our collection of spares for the later series of Vedettes. This first engine was the 850cc unit the later variants being 918cc. If anyone can locate, trips over or hears of a Vedette or Morris Marine Engine please let us know. Hopefully David will then be able to build a replica and see this lovely car back in full service. Thank you, Morris Marine Register. www.morrismarine.org.uk Last edited by Morris Marine; 31 Dec 2005 at 12:36. Reason: Spelling! |
