I just wish I'd thought to check the ISO (it's very grainy) and perhaps bracket it to prevent the burnt out highlights.
I plan to return this year to try again. |

I love those shots stefan - there's an elegance in them that you just don't see anymore in racing photography, mainly because the sport itself has lost that side.
Much as i admire many of the current top photographers, it's the likes of Jesse Alexander i'd love to emulate. http://www.jessealexander.com/ (just a wee bit off-topic....) Last edited by gi_gav; 1 Apr 2004 at 14:07. |

Ah, lovely photos there. Those were the days - when you could stand in the middle of the track to get your photos.
I just found this site... http://www.raupp.com/ Very glossy Ferrari images. I'd like to know his technique - I think there's a flash involved. They have a strange half studio look. |

They were all taken with a Canon EOS-1D using a 28-70mm f/2.8 USM lens. ASA/ISO was 500 for all of them except the first one (upper left), which was 400. Manual exposure for all. #1 - 1/25, f/2.8 #2 to 8 - 1/50, f/2.8 #9 - 1/60, f/2.8 #10 & 11 - 1/50, f/2.8 #12 & 13 - 1/25, f/4.5 #14 to 17 - 1/60, f/2.8 #18 - 1/50, f/2.8 #19 - 1/13, f/2.8 #20 - 1/20, f/5.6 Martin Last edited by Hugewally; 13 Apr 2004 at 00:03. |

f/2.8, really? Wow - how can you get them sharp from front to end then? Depth of field is very limited. Also when I look at the alloys all of them look 'frozen' - and even the 'glow' of the brakes is still 'round' and not one big stipe how do you do that whith such low shutter speeds? I've tried to make some night pictures at a local rally. It was my first time shooting cars at night with a speedlite. I had to set the camera to manual for proper exposure. The whole automating exposure system was useless (10D + 550ex - with some luck I have the 1D soon...). May I conclude that because of the lens and proper (flash-) exposure you were in very close range to the cars? Did you change the flash exposure or the 'film' exposure. Thanks for you help! Rgds, Sander. |

My attempt from the 24 hour 2CVs last year - as you can see, I'm not good with night photography but I hope to do a bit better this year after reading this thread:

Some fantastic photography here, folks. Thanks for sharing!
It's not racing-related, but I was playing around with shutter speeds a few weekends ago. My daughter was waving a "sparkler" around while we lit off some fireworks. |

I was at Le Mans a few years ago, you need to be able to Pan with the cars, but it takes some practice, for best results do it when the cars are breaking hard so that you get the glow of the brake disks.
Another technique is to take a tripod, or use a beanbag to rest the camera on a wall / fence and take light trail pics, set the shutter speed to 10 or 20 seconds and you can get some interesting results. |
