Damon should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Some advice from the experts please.

This weekend I've spent some quality time with my new digital camera. It's a fairly basic 2 million pixel Samsung with a 3x optical zoom. My knowledge and history of taking photos is limited to say the least. I suspect this is why most of the photos I took of moving things today at Thruxton didn't come out so well. The following are examples of the better photos (there were many far worse even than these in the batch!) that I took today. I'd appreciate a little help from those of you that know what to do with these things, so that I can have pictures a little closer to the quality I've seen on this board. So here are the pics (please don't laugh!). These two are from the British GT race:

And finally, a display that I can at least get things moving slowly in focus. This is Nelson Piquet Junior having just spun out during the first British F3 race. So guys, any thoughts?

Advice: the camera you have is NOT suited to motorsport IMHO

Have to agree with Kelvin, the camera you have is the digi equialent of a fun/snappy camera?? The problem is although it has 3x optical zoom, the effective focal range appears to be quite small so objects will be small.

Also at 2M pixels IMO will be best in the paddock.

You haven't done too badly with what you've got. The pictures above at exposed okay, there isn't tons of camera shake and you've captured interesting points in the races. My attempts in the early Nineties were unutterably poor, being mostly single cars going past and looking slow and boring.

However, the camera isn't suited to on-track action. As Jason says, get into the paddock and shoot up close, trying different angles and (if your camera has the option) different apertures, and see what you come up with. Maybe get up close and shoot driver portraits as they are getting ready for the race, or chatting amongst themselves.

Don't forget to post some samples on here.

Thanks guys, I suspected as much. I guess I'll have to persevere, it was an expensive snappy camera at £150!

I have to agree with the other guys - I think you've done a pretty good job with the equipment you've got Damon. You might even find that you've got enough pixels to crop some of these (such as the mini shot) and still get reasonable quality.

One thing I would say though is that when you take full-length shots of people - always remember the feet! This is something I've been frequently guilty of and have to consciously remind myself of.

As I've said before look at the camera's abilities not it's pricetag. Don't expect a £150 digital to be the same as a £150 film camera.

Paddock and driver pics seem to be your only options.

Neil is correct about portraits - either show the whole body, or the upper torso and head. You wouldn't shoot someone's lower 2/3 and cut off the head, so likewise you don't shoot the upper 2/3 and cut off the feet.

If you're getting in tight, always focus on the eyes. You can get away with slightly OOF noses and heads but a typical portrait is nothing without sharp eyes.

My 3 Megapixel Kodak with 3x zoom is mostly for the pits. However I do look for for those places where I can get close to the track. This gets tricky due to shutter lag. These two came out okay even though they only take up about half the image. To get anything interesting I have had to use an SLR with a decent lense.

Great shots guys, I think I can live with my camera if it has the potential to take pictures like those.

Damon, your pictures, limited as they are by the zoom are fine. Nice and sharp - good action.

But, cropping and enlarging aside (if you have enough pixels as Neil says), you really need an SLR for motorsport photography, with a decent zoom lens.

Just spend your winnings from last season's TTFL on a nice digital SLR and lenses - only a few thousand.....

Or buy a nice 'cheap' film version for a few hundred! Or second hand is good, cos you can always update the lenses (for about 10 times the price of the camera )

But yeah, some good photos - limited by equipment. But the Piquet one is nice I do actually really like the Ferrari as well

Btw, just noticed your title - I'm no expert (though I'm good at crashes!!! lol!!)

I've been using SLRs (in my limited way) for motorsports photography since about 84. I got my EOS 100 in 92 and I've used it ever since. But I've reached the stage now where the advantages of digital photography are fast luring me in that direction, only trouble is I can't afford a digital SLR (and only an SLR will do, I'm afraid). It really needs to be a Canon as well, coz I don't want to have to buy new lenses!

This probably sounds very silly but is an "SLR"?

These
http://www.tkracing.co.uk/bran15thjunindex2.htm were taken with a Nikon digital with 70-300mm zoom from quite a distance. Picture quality is down so I could get them on the web, I also get reasonable results with my Canon sureshot but have to get a lot closer and it takes a bit of practice getting used to the shutter delay
