Jared should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Today, each Grand Prix car has a number assigned to it and keeps it the entire season. However, before the mid-1970's, Grand Prix cars would have different numbers at each Grand Prix. I've noticed one example, Phil Hill in 1961 had #38 for one race, then #2 for another, and another for other races. The defending World Champions didn't even carry #1 at all races.

Does anyone know what year this practice changed, and before that date, how were the numbers assigned? Did the team request those numbers, or did the individual promoters hand them out? Any info would be appreciated.

I think 1973 was the first year that team numbers were assigned, though I think they must have changed at some point during the season because I vaguely remember some anomalies. As for how the numbers were allocated before, I think it must have been down to the individual race organisors.

I've just checked on this and it was from Belgium 1973 that the teams had set numbers that they stuck to through the year. For 1974 the start numbers were based upon the finishing position in the Constructors championship (as it is now), but from 1975 onwards the teams kept the numbers from the previous year, except for the team with the Drivers World Champion who swapped with the existing numbers 1 & 2.

Thanks angst. I've always been curious about that.
