Rallying in the South East

On my motorclub's forum, we've just started discussing the above and be interested for other opinions.

Today we found out the Rally of Kent has been cancelled. In the last year plus the Powerush, RoK and Kent Road Rally have all been cancelled. For now, our scatters and 12 cars are still running. This week Longcross / their owners also announced that motorsport won't be running any longer in any shape or form at that venue.

What hope is there for rallying in the SE of England, or is it dying (dead?) now?

What is the competitor base like in the south east. Has it been a case of trying to run too many rallys with too few competitors.
I know we are lucky up here in the north west, there are a lot of drivers, but occasionally when too many events are run people pick and choose. Some rallys then struggle for entrys, while the more popular ones thed to be over subscribed.

I think various issues - fair few do tarmac rallies ie don't want to do the forest like RoK, entries are falling, PR issues (eg Powerush), costs for forests etc. Rallies are being cancelled now more and more frequently. Other than the above, not sure why it is.

Forestry charges too high, no other venues, no support from the MSA

As Sam says forestry charges are high, the RoK also has quite a few road miles which puts some people off and also it wasn't a round of many championships so it couldn't draw entires based on that (205's were invited but declined for one).

As for rallying in the south east as a whole - the loss of Longcross is a big blow, we had 2 visits pencilled in for later in the year and it was a regular fixture on our calendar. I've started looking further afield for other venues but you're starting to look at overnight stays and the added cost they bring. New venues are needed - but where are they going to come from? Pressure for housing will kill of some prospective venues and noise issues will stop others being used.

We were planning on doing the RoK this year but obviously not having the car any more killed that one off We've only done tarmac up until now but fancied trying out the local forests.

Bert,
Don't give on playing in the woods down South.
There is the SE Tempest in November based in Aldershot, and you will have time to get the car ready.
I guess for Tarmac in the south it's a trip further West for 2 or 3 events at two venues in Wiltshire junction 17 M4, I would guess about 100 miles from London

The woods are out of the question for now - when the car emerges it'll be in Tarmac spec. We'd survived Abdingdon intact so were planning on spending some of the budget on getting some forest suspension and tyres - obviously with the car being stolen that scuppered those plans. When the new car is ready we'll be on bare bones in terms of wheels, suspension and tyres as it is so the forest will have to wait

As far as venues go - Longmooor and Goodwood are two that spring to mind. Abdingdon isn't south east but is easy to get to, East Anglia becomes an option as does places like Wiltshire but these will require overnight stays. As far as the Tempest goes maybe parts of the route can be used instead of Longcross for the Mini Tempest?

Hopefully next years RoK will be all systems go some of the stages are 10-15 minutes from home so it really is my local event.

Which venues are you thinking of there?

(Up until last year used to live very near J17 of the M4...)

Isn't longmoor a bit dependant on wars?

Colerne and Keevil one of which has two events a year now.
Couldn't think of the names earlier.
