I agree with what he says about the government, usually, but I'd prefer he stuck to the motor-racing.

Autosport.com have followed the lead of Atlas, autoracing1.com and Forix in becoming pay sites. Which site(s) will be next to make the switch?

I preferred Roebuck's race reports too, but I always go straight to Mark Hughes' Trackside View, mainly to see which corner Taku is trying flat-out!

It's going to lose them a lot of hits, I for one will only be going once a week to see the jobs, before they start charging for that too.
It's gone downhill in much the same way as the magazine has, less and less detail, more adverts etc
Anyway surely if it's such a popular site then they should charge more to the advertisers for those damn annoying pop up ads.

The problem for Autosport is that the only series they cover in any sort of detail is F1. Therefore only F1 fans are likely to subscribe. Event then there are lots of free rival sites.

Last year I stopped buying Autosport and subscribed to Daily Sportscar as they provided 100% sportscar news, including info never found in Autosport.

I suspect Sportscar, WRC, Touring car, IRL etc. fans would not now subscribe to Autosport as the respective series are not covered in any serious detail.

Even Autosports F1 coverage, for my taste, is far too focused on driver interviews and personalities instead of tech info etc. on the cars and series.

Berni Digital TV cost a mere 6 quid a race, for every practice session, qualifying & Race with 8 screens, inc a data screen...and British fans wouldn't pay!..(Well the 'real' fans did)...it'll be interesting to see if they will buy Autosports stories.

I remember paying 1/6d (that's One Shilling & Sixpence) for my Autosport magazine in the '60's!

Actually I prefer Simon Arron's witty summaries and Steve Cooper's race news/reports in Motorsport News on Wednesdays(same publisher as Autosport)

Lets just stress again - the website's free if you subscribe to the magazine - which is cheaper than buying it every week.

Autosport website starts charging!!!

I cannot believe that Autosport want people to pay to view their online articles! It's outrageous! I just won't bother looking on their website anymore, there are plenty of better sites out there that cover motorpsort.

I propose we all boycot the site!

This has been discussed extensively on the F1 forum.

Autosport is a business. Their core product is the magazine - and the website is an offshoot of the magazine.

Subscribers to the mag can view the online stuff free, which is fair enough.

They'll have done research about the best balance for the website and they've made a decision.

Why should they give content to you for free?

Autosport used to be unmissable. Now with increasing competition online, its reporting of everything, non F1, has worsened.

I agree that the web has lessened the impact of Autosport.

Ten years ago the mag used to be half a day's reading, with lots of new information.

Now that's not really the case.

The ultra tabloid approach, particularly since the current editor took over, is also regrettable.

Bring back the days when it was 1.50 and half the pages were black and white I say!

It's still a great mag, but these days there's a little too much F1 in and Button is hyped to the extreme. I say that as a predominately F1 fan....

It used to have fewer pages, yet covered more categories in more detail. Hmmm....

I still buy it of course, being an idiot.

It's still the best motor-racing magazine, but in the mid nineties it was really pushed as "the magazine the industry reads" whereas now it's big pictures and small stories!

nononono, crash.net isn't free, it has STUPID ANNOYING POPUPS AND STUPID ANNOYING ADVERTS like that jaguar one that activates every time you roll the mouse over the window.

if you have a subscription to autosport you can read the site for free. which is cool cause i think they compliment each other quite well.
