Challenge Initiative

I remember reading about this concept over the winter.

Finally there's a pic of the car in this weeks autosport.

Looks very good.

Anyone know anything?

Peter WArdle was around Rockingham today trying to persuade F3 drivers to go into his series, a rehashing of a failed 1970's concept, "Indylantic"

If ever there was an unwanted and uneccessary series this is it.

Weren't we meant to be midway through its second season by now?

I think there could be a role for it.

If costs are kept affordable it could be a place for single seater drivers who don't make the F3000/F1 grade to race rather than go into touring cars or GTs.

There's not really a series filling that role.

People like Mark Hynes, Ben Collins, Damien Faulkner, Darren Turner etc would I think get more satisfaction out of this than racing in ASCAR or the Porsche cup or whatever.

A sensible calendar, with races of a decent distance and properly marketed - I reckon it could work well.

Lets hope so.

Wow, didn't think this series was still around. Apparently there's some sort of launch even on the 19th at Rockingham.

Pics are available at www.challengeinitiative.com

If championshps like this can get going, then what does that new motorsport matrix thing actually do?

I see from their website the first race was at Rockingham on July 26th and there is a race at Silverstone on August 9th.

Now I know I wasn't concentrating on he support races, but I'm sure there were only Pick-ups and Ascars at Rockingham on the 26th.

No mention of them listed for Silverstone this week either!

Where did you find those dates on the website? I can only see a blank page for '2003 provisional calendar'
The launch is on Aug 19th so I guess they are not expecting to start until 2004. Only 3 drivers are currently registered.
Hamish;I get the impression that this is intended to be a major series to attract spectators(even has a supporters club!)-car looks in F3/F3000 range, whereas FBMW is another cheap starter series?

Wardle got a very bad reputation in the 70s with Indylantic - Autosport used to slate him something rotten.

If F3 doesn't want to run on the oval and/or Rockingham wants a regular single seater element to their ASCAR weekends then they are going to have to make their own series. This new series could work well.

The data taken directly from the website of the series, look in the "10 point guide" section.

There is no need for this series, especially as its based on a concept that failed almost 30 years ago. I might have to have a look through the old Autosports to see what the contemporary view of the failed "indyatlantic" concept was.

There is a launch at Rockingham on the 19th - live on the internet too apparently. It sounds like in interesting concept - anyone interested in it?

Seem to remember that the basic idea behind 'Indylantic' in 1976,was that competitors were on a share of the gate money.I remember going to the launch of this on my lunch break-it was in the Euston Road between Thames TV and Capital Radio.
From then on things went downhill. You would need to speak to people who were involved,I have heard stories that would be libelous if repeated.
I don't see this stands any chance if its going to involve novices and /or complete unknowns. The only thing that attracts a crowd these days is celebs.Whether the cars are 2CVs or F1s (EuroBOSS) does not seem to make much difference.

I am sceptical about this championship. To make it financially viable, they're going to have to get crowd figures bigger than TOCA meetings, and that's apparently going to happen without any TV coverage:

Quote:
Taken from the 10-point plan at www.challengeinitiative.com

9. MEDIA COVERAGE AND PROMOTION
Rather than spend excessive sums of money on obscure satellite TV coverage or on a terrestrial slot in the small hours, the CHALLENGE will initially focus on making the most of the technology made available by the growth of the Internet.
While I think their idea of broadcasting the races over the Internet is a good one, I doubt enough people would watch online to make the series work.

Is it just me or does the car look like a Formula Zip on steroids?
