Years and years ago back in the early 70's when I was building my Modsports GT6 my mate had the next lockup to mine.He went away on holiday and his Navigator had done some work on the car " MK1 Escort". He got me to drive this rally car in our local Gravel pit.Well, Ah Hem! I ran out of talent trying to emulate Roger Clark and binned the car.We got it all fixed by the time he returned from holiday and never knew to this day what had happened.
That was the first and last time I went rallying. Much respect for those guys.

Two brothers, mates of mine are into rallying, mk1 mini, and a 205 borrowed my trailer in 2004, we tagged along to watch. following them up the A23 they got a bit of a wiggle on. on arrival MArk said, I knew when I could read the numbers on the mini door in my rear view mirror it was time to slow down. Screw loose territory.

I know of a few people with repeat number plates on several old scooters. you can only ride one at a time!

That has reminded me of a similar incident with a car. In the early 70s I worked for Epco, manufacturers of hydraulic jacks and rams (the orange ones) and one of the designers was a friend and also a petrolhead. He had a grey 1 litre Ford Anglia 105E (unmodified) as a road car. I showed him an advert for a modified Anglia road car in Essex which turned out to be run by Bert Avard of East Anglia Racing Team fame which my friend bought. It had a 1340cc engine, close ratio box and trick suspension. Coincidentally it was the same grey colour as his own road car. Obviously, until he could sell his first car, he swapped number plates and tax discs to have fun with the road racer on the basis that he could only drive one car at a time. Unfortunately he was shopped by one of his neighbours who was probably annoyed with the noise of the straight through exhaust and he was fined for several breaches of the law.

Back in the 60s a couple of my mates who were brothers had identical Maicoletta 250cc scooters with the same registration number, one was in our village and the other was in Liverpool who was at University. As they only had one set of paperwork for both and if one of them was pulled over you were given 10 days to produce them at your local police station so they would post them to each other if needed. They had one insurance with both their names on the policy. If one of them didn't happen to have the tax disc at the time they would say it had fallen off. They were very quick and quite advanced scooters in their day with good road holding and quite capable of beating some of the motorcycles at the time.

All I can say is I'm surprised that you all seem surprised at these shenanigans! Of course it would *never" happen today ......it would be a lot more difficult. My truck failed its MOT because the VIN plate had.fallen off and the chassis tag had been painted over. A new one set me back eighty quid and a re-test, which is even more expensive.

I met a guy in France at a rally a few years ago, a genuine 70mph scooter, comfy too. sensible money compared to a Lambretta too!

Wonder how useful that would have been for following the rally and getting from stage to stage. Good that it was comfy and if it was comparable to a Lambretta that says something

Zef, I dont think German scooters are cheap anymore.
A friend of mine wanted to buy a Maicoletta this year and I was surprised how much the seller wanted for it

They never made that many to begin with
so very rare now

It had an electric starter and bigger diameter wheels than other scooters of the day, also we often used to go 3 up on it to our local town at night https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maicoletta

When I was a young lad my dad bought me a model of one of those in that colour. I think he brought it back from Italy when he was in the navy.

A German scooter ?
brought back from Italy ?
could that be a misunderstanding ?
Lambretta and not Maicoletta ?

German scooter exports to Italy were about as successfull as our exports of bagged beach sand to the Sahara states...

I have to confess to impulse buying a Zündapp Bella Suburbanette,
ultra rare, less than 200 made
Zündapp Bella. The Queen of Scooters (due to the large wheels and the superior handling)
The Bella was dubbed the scooter for motorcycle riders
and mine made me realise that I am a bike person, not a scooterist

see me with it:

https://www.bike-urious.com/bought-o...-suburbanette/

and no, thats a complete bike, the missing side panels were meant to made it leaner, cooler and save some money

Note to the moderator:
can we move this to a new thread "Historic Racers and Scooterism ?"

We kinda lost the Brexit topic out of sight

The manager at my old firm tells me that after months of telling them to get their fingers out all of a sudden customers are clamouring for info on what to do come January, probably as a result of the news footage of huge queues at the tunnel while the French conducted trials of their new impex procedures. Seems for once the French are ahead of us, if not the game. Our lot are still making mudpies having decided to dig up half of Ashford and build a huge truck holding area, which doesn't have a snowball's chance of being ready in time.

This looks similar to the Jawa Manet scooter a mate of mine had. That also had larger (wire) wheels and electric start. That was no flying machine however as it was only 98cc!

In fairness, given that they only broke ground in July, they've done a lot of work but the litmus test will be if they can get the offices built and HMRC computers running in under 5 weeks. This is how it's looking in a pic borrowed from Kent Messenger, M20 just visible top right:

Temporary offices and IT systems can be installed in days, I've done it myself for major construction works so that part is no issue to me. The major problem is hard standing and if they don't get that finished the local roads will become mud baths.

IT hardware can be installed in days - but the software doesn't exist in any usuable form. Currently the government systems aren't available for us to test with (because they don't work) and current projections don't have them ready for January 1st. Also we still don't know exactly what information is needed for all of the interfaces we need with the various systems. We're 'best guessing' a lot of stuff at the moment so there's going to need to be rework when we actually find out what's required.

It seems, despite the advances in IT, there are still a few things that haven’t been fully developed. We’ll see what the Govt does on the 1st January. Must be hard having to do guesswork, although I’m sure that using a computer knowledge brain, a lot of it will be calculated. Best of luck
