V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup will take on some of motorsport's biggest names in the Race of Champions event in Beijing's iconic Bird's Nest stadium in November. Whincup will be the first Australian four-wheel racer to compete in the 21-year history of the event, racing a variety of cars against 16 other drivers from different motorsport backgrounds over three days from November 2-4. Among his rivals will be Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, current F1 world championship leader Jenson Button and world rally championship points leader Mikko Hirvonen. The 26-year-old has agreed to take part in the event after V8 Supercars cancelled their Bahrain event scheduled for November 8 this year.

First Australian? I could've sworn Neal Bates ran in the Race of Champions back when it was exclusively for rally drivers.

That does ring a bell, the late-90s perhaps when it was held in Gran Canaria?

From memory though he didn't make the qualifying cut for the main event....that will probably be their excuse for using 'first Australian'

Good luck to Whincup, lets hope he gets the official nod to compete.

Bates competed in 1997, although I cant remember where it was, somehow I think it may have been the Canary Islands, may be wrong though.
