Optimax Petrol

Hello, considering running this shell Optimax and wondered if any of you use it and are you happy with it? Do you get the results Shell claim you will?

Remember that in NSW there are only 2 oil refineries and they are Caltex and Shell all the other petrol stations get their fuel from them (except for Woolies and some independents who get their fuel from Singapore)

BP and Mobil get their fuel from Shell and Caltex in NSW.

So no matter what Shell says about their fuel they can't say it is better than BP or Mobil when it comes from the same tank!

I know for a fact that Shell and BP come from the Shell refinery and Mobil and Caltex from the Ampol refinery at Kurnell. I only use optimax in my car and I reckon it as good a petrol as you are going to get in Australia..

Well AJ, with the WRX high octane unleaded is manditory, and I usually use Optimax. No problems, but not sure if it does what they claim.

The only thing I do know is that normal unleaded makes it very sick indeed.

AJ,
I have used it in both my XR6' . There is some benefit but not enough to justify the extra money you have to pay for it. On a long trip i was definately getting more from a tank thaN i was on standard unleaded, just not sure if it was enough to cover the extra cost. Performance wise it was very hard to pick the difference. Just give it a go and see what you think. It isnt going to do any harm.

But in what car?

I saw a Fuel test on RaceScar and this new Elf TurboMax stuff CANES, in a modified Evo IV the car gained 50Kw @ all 4 wheels from 305 with Optimax to 355Kw and thats with wheelspin on the dyno! problem is the fuel costs about $7 a litre so its only really for track days

Why not just use regular unleaded in the standard motor?

Ummm, I was under the impression that Optimax and other premium fuels burn cleaner and have additives that help to clean your injectors and minimize carbon deposits. This is what Shell claim anyway........

I thought in the long run this might save me a little money.

I put optimax in my car once and it pinged like mad!
I would not use it in that car again!

But then it normaly runs avgas!!!!! (HQ race car)
Optimax (or the same fuel with a different name from BP) is not as good as avgas but it is a lot better than the super that we had 10 years ago!

Optimax and other 98RON fuels won't make a big difference to cars designed to run 91RON fuel (eg Falcon Futura).

I ran my old car, Pulsar SSS, on 91 normally but tried optimax and I found that while performance was slightly increased and it seemed a little smoother, it ran so rich that I was actually using more fuel.

But on the other hand in a Volvo 440, the car ran amazingly better (from about 9L/100km to 6L/100km on the highway).

Some cars, as mentioned above, are designed to run the higher octane in which case use it always.

My thoughts are with Eliphino's post above. What has changed essentially is the octane rating of the fuel. The lower octane fuel shouldn't make a difference in a vehicle designed to run on normal unleaded. In vehicles with a higher compression ratio the higher octane fuel is needed to elimnate pre ignition which is noticed as engine knocking.

Mate, I just use normal unleaded in the EF2. Man's car that. The money I save on fuel I can spend on beer, blue t-shirts and loose women with tattoos.

My Dad used Optimax in his XR6 VCT and swore by it, he insisted the performance was alittle better and the fuel economy was far better. Now he has an AUII with the standard 4.0 motor and just uses ordinary unleaded.
