Put grass and gravel there if you don't want them overtaking with skill. If the powers that be really want F1 to return to racing, why keep DRS but penalise ingenious overtaking?

Don't think so. Vettel pitting was a reaction to Verstappen.

Note that Kimi was the only driver who didn't pit, and he was passed by both of the drivers that pitted. Vettel would have been a sitting duck for Verstappen at the end.

Whatever, at this point, Max's talent is undeniable. Doesn't need FIA gratification. A missed podium here or there, he still started 17th and passed up to P3.

Red Bull should have either waited 1 lap so the undercut would,ve worked or keep going. Both cases he would've been 2nd before Vettel.

I’m watching this in German. I don’t speak German. Why did Vettel stop a 2nd time? Made the end a bit close! The commentators here don’t appear to agree with the verstappen penalty either. Or the Ericsson one.

Its difficult. We complain about bad driving and the need to keep within track limits. Yes an awesome passing effort but ultimately he took too much off track. Sad but it was a great effort.

The stewards made this decision, but what do we want?

Some fans complain of people driving off track. Others (?) complain that we lose this overtake..
We could have massive kerbs, or walls, but we wouldn't have seen that move either and it would be more dangerous.

Tell the FIA what you actually want. Except that won't help, because we can't tell them for definitively.

Well would have given that race high points but that penalty ruined it and shows how the powers to be need to learn what entertainment should be, silly introductions and then penalising several good overtaking incidents shows how out of touch they are with pure racing

I think because they knew that to stay on their existing strategy meant no chance of catching Lewis.
To change covered off Verstappen (just) and could possibly force Mercedes to respond, at which point they'd hope for an undercut as they nearly had after the first stop.

Overall, it looks like a good decision - didn't weaken their finish and could have improved it.

That's not the point though. The question is why it should happen, not why it does. There are plenty of valid arguments about why Verstappen should be penalised, but the argument "rules are rules" is irrelevant if we are asking "why are rules rules?"

And as Mark Webber has pointed out, track limits were broken on quite a few occasions, including overtaking manoeuvres.

I noted that one of the stewards is from Finland and has driven for Ferrari in the past, Iassume he was outside the stewards room door when the Verstappen decision was made.

So Salo only made his decision because he was biased? He isn't the only one involved and it is most likely it was a decision that would have been made whoever was involved.
