Perkins Engineering Chassis Histories... A Detailed Review

Below is the histories as I understand of all cars that have been built by Perkins Engineering.

87 and in some ATCC rounds in 88.

Bathurst 1000.

contested some ATCC and Bathurst with the car still in HSV colours,
albeit with a brighter shade of green. Sold to Lansvale Smash Repairs,
but I think was only raced at Bathurst, and possibly the Adelaide GP.

PE005 VL 09/88. Raced by Perkins at the Sandown 500, Bathurst,
Wellington 500 and the Adelaide GP all as # 10 with HSV sponsorship. Raced at the Winton and Sandown ATCC rounds by Perkins as # 11, in 88 colours,
albeit without any sponsorship and as a privateer entry. Run at Bathurst 89 as the # 16T car on the opening day of practice. Sold to Bob Pearson by the beginning of 1990 who raced it in some ATCC rounds and at Bathurst, with Mark Duquet racing it at the Phillip Island round.

I believe (and if I am wrong I am sure Martin Collins will correct me) That chassis PE036 was sold to Mark Porter, who I believe has since sold it again. Chassis PE035 is still owned by Team Kiwi Racing and actually made an apperance on track at Pukekohe over the weekend in VY spec (Not in any race). The car is now used for ride days and is still damned quick. I understand that PE035 will not be sold and is to be kept for nostalgic reasons.

Well done!! The detail is amazing!

A couple of extra bits and pieces.

PE 024 was the rebuilt PE 021, which went to the Ultratune team, onto South Pacific Motor racing and finished up I think in the hands of Tony Evangelou.

PE 038 went to Jay Verdnik and is being run in the HPDC series this year by Aaron McGill ( Verdnik is running an ex Team Dynamik chassis).

I thought PE 019 ended its days against a tyre barrier at Oran Park. I think it was PE 015 ( ex Pretty) that was run in Konica 01 by Evers, Habul, March etc.

Ric Shaw built a VS Commodore a few years ago and I have an idea PE 021 ( ex Alcair/Crambrook) may have been utilised in this process.

just to add a little bit more that may be of interest

Chassis PE021
after it was crashed the log book and running gear was used by Alcair and I assume Chassis No

The Chassis was repaired and Kerry Baily ended up with it, He sold it to Clive Wiseman to replace the origanal Ultratune car that was crashed at Bathurst at the Media day by Mic Donaher ( 97 AMSCAR )

Chassis PE026
John Falkner had this chassis after it was repaired by Dencar (all parts were tacked in but had to be finnished) and he was trying to sell it in 98

PE003
The car you have listed for this chassis No actually carries chassis No PE887002 ( As I have a copy of the log book) It was sold to Gary Cannan who raced it in the AMSCAR series in 97. The Last VL to race in V8 Supercars still resides in Tassie

PE037 VT 09/00. Debuted by Ingall at Queensland 500 who raced it in 01
ATCC until the Waneroo round. Raced at Bathurst by Youlden & Adam
Macrow. Sold to Independent Race Cars and raced in the Konica series by
Paul Dumbrell in 02, Mark Porter in 03 and Tony D'Alberto in 04.
It seems Mr Brant's IRCA team has sold this car... to Adam Wallis.. who plans to run the rest of the 2005 HPDC series in this quite successful car... You wouldnt know it was headed for its 6th season of competition though

Amazing detail! Great work Anthony.

Do you know anything about the chassis that LP stuck into the wall at the Esses at the Buthurst Media Day in 199.... um 7 or 8? Someone help me with the exact year. I know tt was a VR/VS, not a VT.

It didn't get much media coverage as it wasn't captured on TV. LP missed a gear an in his words "F***** it". The bent chassis sat unloved with the tractors and planes in the 2nd shed at PE for a few years.

I don't know which chassis number it was.

This was chassis PE030..the first one...and the damage was done at the 1997 Bathurst media day. Larry later rebuilt the shell, which was the one run by Dougal MacDougall in 1999 and permanently stuffed at Phillip Island. Larry built a new PE030 which went on to win Bathurst in 1997.

This is courtesy of noonz....and he is never wrong about this stuff!!

From my records:

PE 006 was the Noske car in 1988 was then sold to Bob Jones and at some point Heather shule drove the car it then became the Anthony Trait Toll express VL and was sold out of Rod Smith Racings shop down at Sorento Vic in Jan 1994, the car now resides in Sydney and belongs to Greg Young.

PE 007 if this was the car that Ron Missen built and the one that Harvey/Bartlett raced at Bathurst it is now scrap metal and was reshelled by the GIO team after a big shunt at Amaroo this is the car that was on display at the Clipsal the 2nd GIO car is also in Melbourne last raced by the Mccleod clan.

PE 014 was never updated to VP spec it was still VN when purchased by it's current owner, PE 014 was the car on display at the Clipsal.

Can this be right? I thought Brock/Advantage Racing only ran 2 VNs, both ex Perkins and both ultimately upgraded to VP. One became the 93 Quix car, which is now owned by Lawson Reid (?). By a process of elimination, the car on display at Clipsal must be the other VN, which went to Mike Conway (after being crashed by Brock as a VP) and ended up as a VS owned by Wayne Russell.

The car that was at the Clipsal (PE 014) was purchased from Tommy Sahuto and shipped back to Australia by it's current owner, Neil Burns confirmed that it was one of the VN's that Larry and Brock had used, the car has an interesting story attached to it that Neil told the current owner about, I will see if i can get the full story and post it later i cant remember the exact details but it had to do with one of Tommy's cars being sent back to larry after it was damaged and no payment coming through to Larry then Larry and Neil went overseas and collected a large payment and had to put a car back together for Tommy (my memory is sketchie at the moment ) i will see what other info i can find out

PE019 was definitely repaired after Peter's big crash at Oran Park and was sold, though I can't remember who bought it and where it ended up.

The car is now used for ride days and is still damned quick. I understand that PE035 will not be sold and is to be kept for nostalgic reasons.
Unless I am very much mistaken, one of the two TKR cars appeared in the background of a photo at Larry Perkins' workshop in Motorsport News. It was there having some repairs that seemed to take an extra long time, for memory from the Bathurst crash, but maybe I have the wrong shunt.

Fantastic work, Anthony!

On PE004, I have Lansvale using the car for the final AMSCAR round, Bathurst and the Nissan 500 at the Creek. I don't have full footage or results of the AGP support races, but from what I do have, I didn't see the car there.

On PE006, so did Jones use this as his primary car for 1990 onwards, or did he alternate between it and the second Lambden VL? It makes sense that he would stick with PE006. In that case, would the #31 Tic-Tac Commodore from Bathurst 1992 be the Lambden VL?

On PE007, it might have been the accident Gibbs had during the 2nd AMSCAR round in May 1989. During heat 1, Colin Bond got a bit sideways coming out of the Dunlop Loop, Gibbsy went down the inside and Bondy tagged him in the left rear; the Commodore DNF's from the race and didn't make it out for the other two heats. The Bob Forbes Commodore didn't make another appearance until the final ATCC round in July - they didn't appear at the third AMSCAR round - so was the car that appeared at Oran Park the re-shelled PE007 or the other new GIO Commodore? If not, when was the new car first used, and would anyone happen to have a photo of the Gibbs car post-accident?

Great info again from Anthony81901, can anybody further the info on PE014, I drove Wayne Russell's car at Bathurst in '98 and assume it was that car, I was told it was a VS. I was also imformed that it was the last Holden to finish with a Holden motor ?
