They tried that in the DTM in 2000 and it didn't work. There are too many ways around it.

Wouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to come up with something better than that.Especially when the NRL can make exceptions to there own rules.

ALARMED by spiralling costs, V8 Supercars Australia yesterday set up an independent review body to keep a lid on the booming sport.

Prominent Australian businessmen John Hewson, Ross Oakley and Roger Cook will work with V8 officials and teams to determine strategy and cost containment.
Quote:
The V8 Commission comes at a time of deep concern about a few wealthy teams dominating a sport which boasts 17 major teams of variable assets.

The skyrocketing prices for top-flight V8 drivers, some of whom have been poached on million-dollar salaries in the battle between Ford and Holden, have added to concerns.
Quote:
Some drivers in the sport earn more than $1 million per season and some teams are thought to spend more than $12 million.

The commission will review all financial aspects of the sport including turnover, sponsorship, licensing and business relations

The title of the story is stupid. Just how can someone say these guys are overpaid. Is there anyone here that believes they are overpaid for what they do?

I can't see this lasting long, I mean the teams aren't very far apart right now, so a Salary Cap will only limit the amount of development and stop the sport from becoming more competitive.

Larry speaks up

Quote:
TEAM owner Larry Perkins believes the overhaul of V8 Supercar spending should include a plan to promote rookies and help reduce current driver salaries.
With top drivers on salaries ranging from $500,000 to $1 million a season, Holden team owner Perkins wants the committee appointed to head up a commission into cost containment to look closely at what the sport's figureheads are paid.

Quote:
Perkins wants top drivers not to be allowed to participate in Friday practice sessions so rookies can have more time to develop their cars and improve driving performance.

"I don't want the point of the massively high costs of experienced drivers to be missed in this cost-containment exercise," said Perkins.

"We need a system where young drivers can jump into the main game and become competitive against the massive experience the others already have.

"If you can hire drivers at a quarter of the price and they can do the job, then of course that's the option a team owner would likely take.

"In turn, that brings down driver salaries and that in turn brings down overall team costs and in turn makes the business far more viable.

"I don't expect to make many friends among the top seven or eight drivers who earn massive dollars with my comments, but it's a starting point for discussion."

Perkins' proposal has drivers split into three groups: rookies, midfielders and top shelf.

Rookies would be drivers with less than two full seasons of V8 Supercar racing, midfielders between three to four seasons and top shelf drivers include former champions, round winners and successful drivers with more than four seasons of experience.

I don't think perkins idea will go anywhere.

Capping driver salaries? Good Luck. They'll just top it up through personal sponsors, merchandising, "appearance" fees, etc.

I'm not a believer in restricting trade. Let the market decide. Anytime people try to manipulate a market it always ends up worse.

Is Mr Perkins argument a false economy though?

Is it cheaper to hire a driver at $500k who doesnt bend the car, or a young pup at $150k with a significantly higher likelihood of wallbanging?

We shall likely see Mr Price in the 2nd Jack Daniels car next season because he has shown talent, and is also likely not as expensive as Richo.

Will the results reflect the investment? Well I dont think there is a prize for the team with the lowest driver salary per points gained Yet
