Record grid for Historic Formula 2 at Donington Park

A record grid of 32 cars will provide a capacity field for the Historic Formula 2 Championship at the Donington Historic Festival over the weekend of 30 April/1 May.

The championship, managed by the UK-based Historic Sports Car Club, is open to cars built to period regulations for Formula 2, Formula Atlantic and Formula B, starting from 1967 and running right through to the end of the 1978 season. Later cars, designed to employ ground effect technology, are not permitted.

The 32-car entry is certainly the biggest since the HSCC took over the management of the category and is thought to be the biggest ever for Formula 2 as a period class.

At least half a dozen new drivers will make their F2 debut at Donington, including historic racing veteran Frank Sytner who will be racing the ex-Sean Walker March 782. Also new to Formula 2 is historic sports car racer and former TVR Tuscan racer Grant Tromans with a Chevron B42. Meanwhile, former Monoposto racer Jim Blockley joins Historic F2 with the Lola T460 last raced by Terry Fullerton.

Cars joining Historic F2 for the first time include the Brabham BT38 raced by Chris Meek when new, which will return to racing this weekend in the hands of Formula Junior racer James Claridge. Now back in ‘Tate of Leeds’ livery, the Formula Atlantic car later became the base of an early Pilbeam hillclimb car but is now back in original trim after a two-year rebuild.

Another car joining the F2 grid at Donington is the Ralt RT1 of Mike Catlow, which he found as a damaged project in America. “I had an RT1 in Formula Atlantic in the 1980s,” said Catlow, who has taken over three years on the rebuild. Until bought by Catlow, the Ralt had spent all its life in the US.

At the head of the field should be Matthew Watts (March 772) and Martin Stretton (March 742), who shared the race wins when the Historic F2 season started at Hockenheim over the weekend of 16/17 April. Other leading contenders include Peter Meyrick (March 782), Darwin Smith (March 722), Richard Meins (March 762), Hans Peter (Ralt RT1), Mark Dwyer (March 742), Steve Maxted (Lola T360) and David Methley (Chevron B35).

“We are absolutely delighted with the F2 field for the Donington Historic Festival,” said Grahame White, CEO of the HSCC. “We now have over 40 registrations for Historic F2. It will be wonderful to see so many period Formula 2 cars on the grid at Donington.”
